Melbourne Zoo Cottontop tamarins at Melbourne Zoo 1967-2011

sorry know I already posted this the other day but was missing over 40 cottontop individuals so had to revise.

Some individuals might be missing and will go back and check the studbook again later (the one posted on main Tamarin thread). The names in ' ' are invented and used for illustrative purposes. Sorry its a very long one - (f = female, m = male and ? = gender unknown of course. And L1 = Litter One and those that follow). And a big thanks to Zoofan15 for counting the number of individuals born at the zoo between 1970 and June 2011 (have to do a recount as was error on my end) and helping (nick)name some of the individuals:

So far have worked out there were 13 founders (7 females & 6 males) all up (11 prior to 2006 and the later two had Melbourne Zoo ancestry so dont know it thats disqualifies them from being founders); and as mentioned about 179 births at the zoo between August 1970 and June 2011 (which although 100 died at birth or shortly after/before three months old; 78 survived longer, most much longer, many going on to be parents themselves):

18 female cottontop tamarins gave birth at the zoo between August 1970 and June 2011, and at least 17 male cottontops sired during the same time period.
There were 7 matrillineal lines established at the zoo between 1970 and 2006:

Melbourne Zoo held (about to be finalised with counting) 208 individual Cottontop tamarins at varying times between the years 1967 and 2011. (≈) 27 individuals were imported between 1967 and late August 1976; and three more individuals 1.2 arrived in early 21st century, one male in June 2003, and a female (from New Zealand) and a male in September 2005. One Melbourne born male returned to the zoo in late 1990s after several years at other zoos, but besides that all individuals besides the 30 brought to the zoo from elsewhere, were born at the zoo (≈178 births) and were either sent elsewhere or lived their lives at the zoo:

of 58 of the 78-79 surviving Cottontop tamarins born at Melbourne Zoo equated, apparently the average lifespan of was/is about 11 years & 2 months;

when calculating those born at the zoo between May 1977 and April 1993 for those individuals who made it to over 12 months of age (and has already had been confirmed to have died before 2011) the average lifespan was 10 years, 10 months & 28 days.
Including those lost to follow the average lifespan for Cottontops born at the zoo between '77 and '93 who lived over 12 months was 12 years, 8 months, & 13 days.


Between May 26, 1977, and April 7, 1993, the Cottontop colony at Melbourne Zoo had an average interbirth interval of approximately 77 days (11 weeks), meaning a birth event (either a single infant or a litter) occurred on average every 11 weeks (and 144 individual Cottontops were born during that time).

9 years, 9 months and 23 days (ranging from 24+ years to 3 & half months) average lifespan of the Cottontops who were born at Melbourne between August 1970 and June 2011 who survived past 90 days of age.

'Kumako' 1.0 (at least 30), 'Biramo' 1.0 (at least 25), 'Tupira' & 'Miyanta' (at least 24 probably longer) and 'Ibanna' (23 & a quarter) are the top five oldest to have lived by the end of 2011 who were at MZ at some time ('Miyanta' and 'Ibanna' born there).


Apparently (55 months/4 years & 7 months, but by now Im relying on ai assistance so possible errors ) is average lifespans of Cottontops born at Melbourne Zoo when including those who died at birth or before 90 days old**
