visited today and saw 3 things that i thought id ask here about.
1* the greater one horned rhino that has the grassy paddock along the road, hugo i think, there was a crate in the paddock so where is he going??

2* the wild boar are being kept else where over winter to allow the grass to grow in their paddock, i know whipsnade is huge but i just wondered where abouts this may be?

3* the sealions have a sign up saying they are on holiday in london. can anyone tell me more about this??

saw one of the lions (not spike) up the tree nearest the cheetahs which was great to see.

1. Much more likely to be the young female 'Asha' born there, who is to move to Chester Zoo.

3. Pool is being renovated. Look on current London thread for further explanation/discussion of Sealions' temporary stay in London.

1. The crate attached to the paddock is for Asha the young female who is moving to Chester Zoo this year (hopefully).

2. The wild boars were in there exhibit around this time last year. I have a feeling it might near the bongos.

3. The sea lions are at London for a while there enclosure is being renovated.

Seeing as 1 and 3 have already been answered correctly,as far as I know the Wild boar are being held off-show in the yard at the back of the paddock,if they are not in that yard they will have gone back to the place that they got them from!

A random point, but there is a chance we could have seen each other as I was there today and saw one of the lionesses up the tree [photos to follow].

For those that know my initial view on Whipsnade, it has changed for the better having now done it on a cool day in which you felt comfortable walking around [and had the car in].

Glad to hear it, I think taking the car in really does make a big difference given the sheer size of the place(though in season can ratchet the price up somewhat).

I agree with Shorts taking the car in makes all the difference. Especially being able to enter the dear park multiple times and at your own pace. Plus the best pinic area in the park is the raised mound. Which gives great views of the deer park and Camel, Pere David's Deer and Yak paddock which is only available to those who have cars so its always quiet even in the summer holidays.

I had the car when I went to in December 2010. I was with my grandparents and sister, they wanted to see a wolverine so whilst they stayed all nice and warm in the car, I was on wolverine duty.:p

ha ha we must have been meters from each other!
i loved the way the other 2 ambushed it when it climbed back down!
i wasnt sure if it was one of the lionesses as i know the male cubs have been castrated and the tree climber was much taller than the others.

Could have been a castrated male, I didn't realise they had any and I've just assumed it was a female :)

By the way, photos in the gallery now :)

I know these things cost money, but personally I'd like them to run more buses round the site and phase out cars for all except those with physical need of a car (ie handicapped or elderly visitors).

For a site with as little cover as Whipsnade to have Bluebell Wood largely given over to car parking does seem a bit sad.

Quick question that I dunno if anybody can answer, do Whipsnade still have the pure East African roan antelope male?

As I understand there was a pure individual [East African male, and the only pure one in Europe] and a male of no subspecies status, but we could only see evidence of one male yesterday.

We'll win you over soon enough. ;)

I don't particularly like random vehicles in any zoo, including staff vehicles. It's also equally annoying that a large area of Whipsnade is off-limits to those on foot, so I'd like to see the cars banished and more free "public" transport made available.
