Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust Courses at Durrell

I havent attended any full course, but i have spent a week in the jersey residences and visited the zoo over and over againg, i was also allowed to attend 2 clases of the DESMAN course that was being held. I found incredibly interesting the course and the rooms are also quite nice, only proble was that i slept on the uppermost floor in the thylacine room, and the bathromm was 1 or 2 floors below so i had to come down to use it. But it was worth it, appart that you get to know people from around the globe and make friends. Not forgetting that the food is delicious, and that you get to be in a library full of Gerald Durrell´s books.
I really enjoyed my time, and hope to do a full course in the near future.

I did the summer school 15 years ago. I found it to be a great experience. Opportunity to interact with fellow students from around the world, and some fantastic lecturers. Very worth while for me, and helped me define exactly where I wanted to get to. Highly recommended.

I too have stayed on the top floor at Les Noyers. The setting is incomparable, waking in the morning to the sounds of White-naped Cranes, Gibbons & Ruffed Lemurs.
Free access to the two libraries [journal & otherwise] is a delight; complete run of International Zoo Yearbook.
What I've seen of the courses is of star quality, as one would expect of the world innovator in the field.

Strangely enough I too did the the Summer School 15 years ago... with you! (I'll let you guess who).
From talking with other people who have done it since, I get the feeling it isn't quite the same. Alot more students and less actual zoo staff enrolling, possibly cut back on the quality of lecturers...? Not to sure but definitely a different vibe.

Was at Durrell last Feb and the story was that there were fewer students these days, not more. Can't comment on the lecturers though.
I still think it would be a unique and fantastic experience though.
I attended a 5 day Callithricid and Lemur course at Durrell around 3 years ago, the experience was fantastic. The lecturers inspirational and the information gleamed priceless. This course completely changed my professional mindset to animal management in the most positive way. I would thoroughly recommend any courses held at Durrell to students, zoo keepers and curators; excellent.

Been back a couple of times since too, even coinciding a visit while the Summer School was on! I think that for a young keeper with maybe experience at only one collection that the Summer School provides a fresh look at things, so it can be only worthwhile. I hope it prospers.
