To clarify my earlier point, the concern isn’t that the entire exotic pet trade is illegal or detrimental to animal welfare; the concern is that some of the trade is one or both of these things because pet dealers and breeders are not held to the same standards as AZA zoos hold themselves to. Thus, acquiring endangered species from pet trade *could* be a net negative for both conservation and animal welfare, making it a risk.
