:P

Now what was the Purpose of that?
I seriously did, I remember when I learned about cowries when I got a book of reef invertebrates a couple years ago, and I looked at this genus.
Did you know about this genus previously? If you did, than thats cool! :)
Marine inverts are my favorite types of animals Ya know, although crabs aren't really my strong point.
Not exactly a helpful comment.

To express doubt that you recognise a fairly obscure invertebrate by its scientific name alone despite being unaware of its common name - being knowledgeable about animals is a laudable thing, but you really don't have to try so hard to impress people! :)

Okay, thats cool! :)
Well, I wasn't trying. I know about that cowry species and thats that, alright?
On this thread I could name a bunch of species that I haven't heard of, so the fact that I know this species out of all the other Less-famous strange species isn't really supposed to Be laudable.
You should see how much I research about Lesser-known animals, I'm a little crazy! :p

Cypraea asellus is not an obscure species, is more or less well known for any seashell collector. What I really doubt is that 90% of people that know this species, know also that it have a common name, and much less are those that know what is this common name. I of course know only the scientific name of it (at least since I added the species to my photo archive, if not before) and never heard about any common name until now - and I don't think I will remember that common name...

I think that name "Little Ass Cowry" is a fairly recent invention. It used to just be called the Asellus Cowry. I googled it because it is a weird sort of name, but it turns out it is just a translation from the specific name (asellus means "small donkey"). Linnaeus didn't normally give the etymologies of his names, so goodness knows why he named a cowry after a small donkey.

Another few to add,
Giant orange tochui.
Mystery worm snake
Slave-Making ant
Happy Eddie (also known as the Puffadder Shyshark)
Wonder Brown
Pleasing Poison frog
Crazy fish

Allobates niputidea
Well, this colombian frog's name comes from a group of scientists who for years didn't know what the identity of the animal was: they didn't have a f*king idea (sorry for the f word):D
