Creationists tell Attenborough to 'burn in hell' - New Zealand's source for oddstuff - strange, weird & bizarre news on Stuff.co.nz
Sir David Attenborough receives hate mail over his belief in evolution, the British broadcaster and naturalist has revealed.

Sir David is preparing for more letters telling him to "burn in hell" when his latest television show, a documentary on Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, is aired in the UK on Sunday.

"They tell me to burn in hell and good riddance," Sir David told Radio Times magazine.

The popular 82-year-old said people often asked him why he did not "give credit" in his programmes to God for creating the natural world.

"They always mean beautiful things like hummingbirds," Sir David said.

"I always reply by saying that I think of a little child in East Africa with a worm burrowing through his eyeball.

"The worm cannot live in any other way, except by burrowing through eyeballs. I find that hard to reconcile with the notion of a divine and benevolent creator."

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and 150 years since his most famous work, On the Origin of Species, was published.

With many species under threat of extinction, keen conservationist Sir David was worried by the notion that the world was a gift to humans from God.

He also declared it as "terrible, terrible" that some British state schools can teach children that creationism and evolution are equal alternative view points.

"It's like saying that two and two equals four, but if you wish to believe it, it could also be five," Sir David said.

"Darwin revolutionised the way we see the world fundamentally, but his basic proposition is still not taken on board by a lot of people."

However, Sir David acknowledged "it would be a very bold scientist, and certainly not me, who believes it's the be all and end all".

Britain's Australia Day Foundation this week named Sir David Honorary Australian of the Year for his work in highlighting Australia's native plants and animals in his award-winning television documentaries.
best quote ever: "It's like saying that two and two equals four, but if you wish to believe it, it could also be five,"

If nice Sir David has to put up with this sort of ****, think what Prof Dawkins must get

Let no one be offended, it is not my intention, but I do not understand how anyone can say such things today, I do not believe in any God, but I am not going to any temple to telling believers that their beliefs and rituals are a nonsense to me, I respect them, but many believers who they think they have the right to tell people that we should or should not believe.

I am personally quite religious, we celebrate in chinese festivals often and within them we pay respect to gods, though I am aware of evolution and I'm not denying that it never happen, maybe perhaps a few years back I had an assignment of how we began.

As if we needed another reason to hate those ******, they go and say things like that to one of Britain's most loveable personalities. And a grandfather in his eighties too, no less.

Religion has a lot to answer for.

No offence intended to any religion, but fanatic extremists do nothing for their cause except alienate and polarise.

Sending ANYONE hate mail should never happen. Fortunately, he has been untroubled by actual violent attacks by any of those nutcases (may they be religious or not...) so far...

"burn in hell" how very loving, faithful and hopeful - not to mention unjudgemental!!

It's awful to think of anyone harrassing Sir David - the man is a legend without whom we (in the UK) wouldn't have colour TV, match of the day or BBC2. Not to mention the host of wonderful natural history programmes. I am a huge fan...

that being said I think the 2 plus 2 equals 5 statement is a little strong. Noone can or should deny evolution on earth however there is still room for faith and an almighty force (even if that ends up being electrons). Noone can pinpoint what makes the essence of life and love. What annoyed me most was studying chemistry and being taught the big bang theory as fact (and Bohr's theory of the atom too for that matter). When you get to a certain level in science most things are theory, very little is fact.

That's true. Darwin's thoery of evolution is just that - a theory. It has never been proven (and probably won't be). However, it is the best model available and all the evidence certainly supports it.

All science is theory. Every theory is continually tested and revised. Evolution is the basic theory underlying the life sciences. Those who deny this are simply ignorant. And in this regard, the Taliban have common ground with Christian fundamentalists. Very scary...

something that most people (certainly creationists) are unaware of however is that scientific theory is NOT the same as the everyday popular meaning of theory. To your average layman, a "theory" basically means the same as a best guess. Almost all of the accepted facts in science are actually theories (in the proper sense of the word), including for example gravity. Can you imagine a creationist saying "well, gravity is just a theory...therefore I don't need to believe it exists"?

I certainly don't think the 2+2=5 statement is a bit strong. I think it is perfectly apt. Evolution theory and creationism are NOT equally valid arguments. One is based on science, the other is based on belief and nothing else.

I have to retract the above statement of unbelievability... I just saw the other day a clip from an American reality show about home-schooled kids, and there was a woman on it saying something along the lines of "I don't believe there is such a thing as gravity. I've never seen any real evidence to prove that it exists" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Amazing, but when it comes to these people I am never truelly suprised.

Ignorance is the worst form of blissful violence (it leads people into all sorts of wild misconceptions and conceptualised ideas of the world that are simply untrue). I reserve a link with some religionists here ... too (pse no offence intended, I just find that their ideas on evolution or the universe expansion are not valid ... re re scientific valid arguement).

I see the beauty of nature through evolution and nothing in the bible gives me any of that. I don't take any offense when christians believe in Creationism, why do they take offense when other people look at nature differently than they do. I thought the ultimate judgements are left to god, not human beings.

If I remember anything from my RS lessons in school (I as asleep half the time), it's that christians are meant to be open minded people who love everyone and everything for what they are. It says a lot when they have to take their beliefs out on an 85 year old who is very difficult to dislike. I'm not religious at all, and I think it's so stupid that people can completely dismiss the idea that evolution exists.

I live in a part of the US where most people believe in creationism. It's quite frustrating at times, but I've learned to just leave it alone. None of them tell me to burn n hell, just that it's likely to happen if I don't start thinking precisely as they do. It's really an unfair debate when you actually consider it. They demand absolute proof that needs to be clear to the simplest of minds to accept science, but all they require to shove their views down my throat is one book and a few memorized and repeated verses.

I had a similar experiance when I was in the US. I was living with a family on a ranch in Montana and their kids were amased I believed in evolution. They thought it was a disproved theory which nobody realy believed in. I tried to avoid religion in discussion while there.
