The owner is one of the largest animal trading companies in Asia. They probably have some kind of netweork to get them. Also, the zoo accepts many animals from closed zoos and former pets.

All the Land Iguanas with a CITES record which have been imported to Japan were from Uganda. All the Marine Iguanas which were imported have origins listed as Uganda, Mali, and Austria. They were "legally imported" because they have been laundered, but all are via the smuggler who owns the premises in Uganda. There is literally zero chance that any specialist reptile facility (such as, for example, iZoo) is unaware that they are dealing with a smuggler when buying Galapagos lizards.

For that matter, I believe iZoo is the middleman through which a *lot* of the Bornean Earless Monitors in European collections initially arrived!

Did they pass away or are they just off-show?

They made the enclosure and announced that the animals were almost acquired, but all went away with COVID.

Komodo Dragon is kept already in the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden.
Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden is currently the only zoo in Japan that keeps Komodo dragon.
