Crocodilians in UK zoos

It really is an eye opener to how limited ex situ crocodilian breeding programmes are by lack of decent facilities. The west african dwarf crocodile has not even been particularly prolific, and yet we are at capacity for this species now in the UK.

How many philippine crocodiles were imported by the Crodocdile zoo? (i amuse they were imported?) And to which zoos will they be moved?

Yes, Crocodile Zoo's owner René Hedegaard is in charge of the import and the brand new breeding programme for these new Phillippine crocs. I think he imported 15 or 20 (something like that). It is also he who decides which zoos get them. As far as i can remember, its:

Crocodile Zoo (of course)
Chester Zoo
London Zoo
Zurich Zoo
Cologne Zoo
Bergen Aquarium (Norway)

Maybe there is one more, but i cant remember which one.

Probably as soon as the zoos are ready for them. Writhedhornbill says that Zurich Zoo has allready recieved theirs, but i dont know about the others.

Yes, I can imagine them in the old Siamese croc exhibit, which was fantastic. I really want to know what happened to their siamese crocs, they were beautiful, and they had done so well breeding wise. Maybe they did a swap with Crocodile zoo for the Philippines......

That is possible, since i think they needed a mate for their lone siamese croc when i last visited CrocZoo (not sure, could be one of the other rare species). I should like to see a photo of the exhibit in Zurich if you have one?

Meanwhile, here are som pictures from Crocodile Zoo:

The entrance and outdoor alligator enclosures
Phillippine crocodile
Ganges gharial and turtle
The exhibition
Australian freshwatercrocodiles
Saltwatercrocodile
Spurred tortoise
American alligator
Rainbow lorikeet
The other tropical animals

I have some video clips of the Siamese crocs and Their young, but as I was not interested in zoos themselves as much on my visit, I overlooked the exhibit itself. I'll put the clips up on the gallery for you.

Do you amounts of Crocs At crocodile zoo, i.e. 1.1 siamese crocs etc.

Not at the moment, bu i have sent an e-mail around to a few Danish zoos, including Crocodile Zoo, hoping to get some animal lists. I also asked how many of the various crocs they have, so if i get an answer, i will post it here.

Tropiquaria in Somerset have spectacled caimans and Amazonia have an adult American gator, theres quite a few private collecters with caiman in there collections, Jerry at BJ herp has bred curviers for the past few years.

this thread is brilliant, thanks to everyone for contributing information. firstly, does anyone know the size of the salties at thrigby now? i havent been for a well over a year but last time i went they had to split up the the two dominant ones into an aligator enclosure, then had to separate the two dominant ones.

toddy, crocodile zoo sounds amazing, but i havent had much luck googling it. any information as to where it is, etc. as i'd love to visit.

Thanks

At the moment London only have a few Caiman on show. I was wondering if anyone knew when and where the Phillipines crocodiles will be displayed?

How big will they be? The old Chinese alligator pool is gone (or offshow at least, the glass has been replaced by info boards.) If this pool was opened up again would it be large enough for the crocs? Or do you think it is more likely they will go in the big pools at the far end of the reptile house that currently hold caiman and turtle species?

The Phillipines crocodiles are rather small, no more than between 0,5-1.0 meters in lenght (their maximum length is 2.5 meters.)

The old Chinese Alligator pool is more than bi enough to keep them and thats where they are going from what i was told late last year by someone in the know.

Was at Thrigby last weekend.

Saltwater crocs split into 2 enclosures, one containing two larger specimens (approx. size of Mugger crocs) and one on its own was much smaller (half the size of the other two).

Spectacled Caiman numbered approx. 15-20 in a fairly small tank.

Beaver Water World

in Kent also has an adult American Alligator (or at least did in 2006)....
