Does anybody have any infomation on this Zoo? It is scheduled to open this summer, but there appears to be very little information on it.

kind of sounds like a handful of annoyed residents trying to drum up outrage etc. How sad

The new zoo was due to open this year in Cromer, Norfolk, and it being run by the owners of the nearby Thrigby Wildlife Gardens. It will have a South American theme in terms of species, with a crocodile house similar to Thrigby, pumas, other cats, 6 rodent species, primates, toucans and flamingoes. There has been a great deal of local oppostion to the development but planning permission was granted and building work has started. I was wondering if anybody had any news on its progress as the Thrigby website is rarely updated.

There is a site run by local people NO! to cromer zoo detailing how to oppose the new zoo. I think the mail objection is visitor traffic, as the owners have stated they won't keep any noisy species and the indoor quarters for most of the animals are to be low-impact wooden constructions on stilts.

why opposition?

In the UK people ALWAYS object if a new zoo is planned near to them- even if its going to be only a small operation. Its fear of the unknown- will they have Dangerous animals or Noisy animals or Smelly animals or Animals which escape,or traffic problems with crowds of visitors- the list goes on.

Even in the countryside in the Uk there are bound to be a number of people living somewhere closeby, not like you lot in Australia with all that space....:)

Hi

I live in Cromer. The zoo will open Easter next year;they delayed because some of the animals were breeding & there was a delay in construction.

And that website IS NOT run by locals,we're glad we're getting a zoo again!

Animal Arrivals

What animals are definately going to be on show when it opens at Whitsun??
Other than the flamingoes coming from Slimebridge where are the other animals coming from??

I know that there will be pumas, jaguars, coatis of some sort as well.
It's not only bring a zoo back to Cromer but an aquarium as well, the two used to be entirely seperate & the aquarium showed local marine species, before Sea Life Centres made it fashionable!

I find it hard to believe a new zoo would get jaguars but didn't South Lakes get Toba the Sumaturan tiger after been open only 3 or 4 years. Is there any surplus stock in the UK that may come to Cromer zoo?

i think they have a female jaguar from Dartmoor zoo - if I remember correctly from the TV series 'Bens zoo'.

A young male Ocelot (born 06) went there last year from Marwell.

Not quite sure why a new zoo couldn't have a jaguar, provided they have decent facilities to care for them.I wonder if that's the same jaguar that got into the tiger enclosure at Dartmoor?

I'm pretty sure the jaguar at Dartmoor was a male though.

Suppose if the proper care was provided there would probably be no problem but its still a big cat would just have thought they'd have to build up more experience before being given a jaguar.

There was a male and a female on Ben's zoo, the female left so they could redevelop the enclosure but I'm sure they gave the impression it would return once that was done. The male was kept though because its enclosure was fine. Things do change so it could be either of them or maybe neither :)
