They were parent reared in the wild before coming to Colchester in September 2003 in the same shipment as the 1:2 at Longleat, South Lakes and Blair Drummond Safari.

Hamilton Zoo in New Zealand has a similar situation, their female Caballe was born in South Africa in 1994 and came to New Zealand in 1999. She gave birth to a male calf (Inkosi) in 2002 and had her second (Mtoto) in 2004, exactly 2 years later. Her third calf (Imani) was born in 2007.

Caballe has become much tamer due to the extensive human contact she receives from her keepers, she has adjusted well to their presence.

i think it helps if wild born animals have interaction with other tame animals of the same species because they can show them how to do things that they don't know how to do.
