Believe it or not, another aquarium will join the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area in addition to the existing Dallas World Aquarium and the Dallas Aquarium at Fair Park. (The latter is affiliated with the Dallas Zoo and is being renovated to be a childrens aquarium). Both existing ones are in downtown Dallas; the new one will be 18 miles Northwest of downtown Dallas and 22 miles Northeast of downtown Fort Worth. The new one will be located inside the Grapevine Mills Mall, just North of DFW International Airport. It will be another SEA LIFE Aquarium, the brand operated by Merlin Entertainments. In the US, they currently have two: one in Carlsbad, California and one in Tempe, Arizona. At 45,000 square feet, the one in Dallas will be the largest of the three. It will be two stories and will have a reported budget of $15 million, set to open summer 2011. The SEA LIFE website does not have a dedicated page for it yet, but articles such as this one provide a few details:

Wow, this is the first I've heard of it. I don't live too far from the area where it is being built. Honestly, the DFW area could use a real marine style aquarium. I love the DWA for what it is (not really a true aquarium), and the Children's Aquarium in Fair Park will be great for its target audience. So why not have 3 aquariums in the area, each one looks like will be completely different.

My dear american fellows: Don't have too much expectations about a Sea Life Center (Aquarium). Here in Europe, many zoolovers call the Sea Life Centers "McSea", because most of them look all the same. Freshwater Spring at the beginning of the circuit, then the River Life, Coast and/or Delta, then the open sea plus some extras like an exhibit for Asian small-clawed otter or penguins and some varying special expositions for seahorses a.s.o. Like McDonalds, you know in advance what you get. But in contrast to McDonalds, its overpriced.

And here's to Merlin for invading yet another city with their homegeneous rubbish. I for one hope neither Dallas Zoo nor the DWA will loose a single dollar to them!
