I believe they imported two 3toed sloths in 1998 and they reproduced. I thought I heard that one of them died, not sure which though....
 
Yes, the male is Lucky...the female is Stony...and their offspring named V.B. The information is from summer 2000.
 
And when the young was born, in 2000 ? And do you know if the young is still alive ? And is it a male or female ? Why they have bred just once ?
 
The main problem I have with this place is that it gets way too crowded. Just a few hours (or less on some days) after it opens there are lines everywhere to see the exhibits. On spring break it looked like 1 big line all around the entire building and this was at 10 in the morning!

The collection is amazing, there are many birds and primates to be seen throughout the building that aren't often seen in other zoos. They now have a few exhibits you can see before paying to get in (Bali Starling, Rhinoceros Hornbill, ETC).
 
Did you evers een the water possum ? I've heared, not only all of the staff have seen it yet, altough it is there for three years...
 
Last time I went a few weeks ago I never saw it either. I am going to try and go sometime this week if I can get by. P.S. to Siamang, believe me, don't try and go to the zoo on Spring Break - its not worth it!
 
I am heading to the DWA on a search for the elusive Yapok. Will let you know later and will take lots of pics.
 
Well, I'm back and I was lucky, very lucky. I did indeed see it. First time by the exhibit I caught brief glimpses of it. When I came by the 2nd time (just a short trip to see if I could see it again) I was in luck. The keeper was just getting there to feed him (he likes prawns BTW). I was able to talk with him some about the animal. There is only one but they are working on getting the little guy a friend. There were two confiscated females in Guyana that were supposed to come here, but that fell through. Lots of red tape I suspect. A second or third yapok is still in the works though. After talking with him some, he said "come with me" and took me in the keeper area where I could get a better view of him and take a few pics. Very cool! Learned a few things about whats going on at the DWA. They are working on a new off exhibit area in a building across the street. There will be much bigger outdoor jaguar holding areas. There is also a new exhibit for guans being built over looking the manatee tank. Expect pics soon!
 
@Jbnbsn99. Congratualtions. Sounds, you had great time at the DWA...I hope, they will still have Yapoks, when I will visit the DWA again, maybe in 2013.

They have new Shoebills ?
 
When I was there last (a few weeks ago) there were no Shoebills. That exhibit has had Saddle-Billed Storks and Turacos I think.

As for the Yapok, I have only ever seen it the one time. For a while it no longer showed up on the display screens at the exhibit, but now it is showing up on ISIS again. For several months ISIS had no listing for Yapok, but now they list DWA as having 1.0. So I have no clue if he is there or not anymore.
 
New Jaguar habitat opening this year. for their twentieth anniversary!
Supposedly open air, and multi-level.
The howler monkeys have been moved to a vertical enclosure near the three toed sloth.
 
Does anyone know where the new river otters came from? Also according to my dad the resident female is heavily pregnant. But apparently the male primero is no where to be found.... So two or three new females and a pregnant female.

According to my knowledge, DWA has four giant otters : male "Primero", females "Sonho", "Rose" (all born at Philadelphia) and "Muneca" (born in Venezuela). So far, Primero and Muneca have been together in the main enclosure, but Muneca is already over 11 years old and never had a litter. To me, it seems highly unlikely, that she could be a first time mother at this late age (that would be a first in giant otter breeding history). It also seems unlikely that DWA would put brother and sister together, therefore it might be a false pregnancy ? (Not uncommon in giant otters!)
