"History of the Dallas Zoo : 1888 - 1940" is available in paperback and audiobook form. The paperback is available at Amazon. The audiobook is available at Amazon, Audible, and I-Tunes.

Here is a link to the paperback version. Only twelve bucks, looks like something I will definitely get. Too bad it stops at 1940. Cleusk, do you know if the author plans to do a followup edition covering 1941 to present?

Thanks for the update, and I'll definitely purchase the book. Was its initial publication really December 2012? It does seem odd that a history book recently published stops at 1940.

I stopped at 1940 for two reasons.

1) I didn't want to scare away potential customers with a large, thick book.

2) The zoo wasn't fully established until 1940. So I figured that would be a great place to stop, as it was the end of an era.

I use the word "established" in referring to its location. The zoo started at what's now Old City Park. Then it was moved to Fair Park. Then it was moved to Forest Park, which was later renamed as Marsalis Park. Then people wanted to move it to Keist Park, but the city didn't have the funds because of the Great Depression. Then there was another movement to have it moved to Fair Park. Because the city had spent so much money on the WPA projects, the City Council made it clear that Marsalis Park would be the permanent location. Although the movement occurred in 1938, I extended it to 1940.

I will cover the period up to the present day. But keep in mind that it took me two years just to get this far.

Ahh, so we have the author in person. Very nice and we eagerly await the second volume that will take us to the present day.

I received it in the mail today and it will make a very nice read on my flight to London. Sadly, though, no photos at all - I was hoping for some nice historic shots of the zoo.

There are also no page numbers, which is really odd - perhaps the only numberless book I have.
