Dallas Zoo Dallas Zoo News 2009

Thanks so much for the presentation! It looks like some of the plans have been tweaked a little (I knew that had happened). I like the looks of it better now. The last major building is getting demolished next week. I've been taking a lot of photos of the zoo over the past few days and will be uploading them over the next few days.

Thanks for the link Zooplantman! It is an extremely informative presentation, and I see that construction is on schedule to be finished by February of 2010. Understandably at this point there isn't a definite opening date for the public.

Ok so Mama and Stumpy (Elephants) are being transferred from Lion Country Safari in Florida but I checked the database and I can't find a location for Gypsy. Does anyone know where he/she is coming from?

I am fairly sure Mama and Stumpy are moving to Cleveland Zoo in 2011 when they finish African Elephant Crossing. They will introduce those two to Cleveland's three girls to create a herd of five. I am not 100% positive on this, but pretty sure.

The brochure that was presented to City Council included those females as part of the exhibit and considering this exhibit will open before Elephant Crossing and Cleveland has three elephants as opposed to one, I'm sure Dallas will get priority with these two girls.

Thanks - I found that right after I posted! :) I'm kinda glad a private holder is giving up his elephant. I'm not saying she was in incapable hands but for the sake of the SSP I think private holders shouldn't have access to elephants.

Does anyone know what happened to these species?
Red-legged Seriema
White-bellied Parrots (these were here about 6 months ago last time I saw them)
Bali Starling EDIT: found. was off exhibit the last few times I was there. now shares an area with Masked Lapwing and Ringed Teal.
Black-billed Magpie

Siamang, I think I remember seeing you mention something about a silver-cheeked hornbill last night when I first read your post. It is there, but off exhibit. The bird keepers have tried getting a viewing area for it, but as it is being phased out now to focus on south-east Asian species, that probably won't happen. I see and hear it most days at the zoo though. The other birds you mention I honestly don't know about. There are so many off exhibit holding areas at the zoo for birds. There are 2 whole barns in the Wilds of Africa devoted to nothing but bird holding.

Looks like I've found out where the rainforest aviary birds went. Except for a few species (Eclectus Parrot, Sunbittern, and a few others) they are moved to the other bird area in the reptile building.

Would be interested to know what you think about the renovation that took place for the Ghosts of the Bayou.

Ohh! Maybe we'll get lucky and "The Hill" plus all the other crap exhibits will close down

I am a little hesitant to comment on what is going on before anything is officially released to the public. What I do know and can say with some confidence is that it will affect an area that is older and has a lot of serious maintenance issues. I think some guess could be made though.

Don't be so hasty to judge an area of a zoo that in all likelihood you've never been to. While there are some older section to our zoo, it is that way almost everywhere outside of those zoos that are not city run. I'm sure most city run zoo have some areas that do not fit in with the modern zoo mentality. While The Hill might not be the most attractive place, remember that that is where one of the most successful Okapi breeding programs ever undertaken began. It is still a facility that houses many critically endangered animals and is still producing valuable offspring for those animals. So to label the area (and "all the other exhibits) as "crap" is itself a "crappy" thing to do.

woah, chill out. Im not saying every zoo is perfect and I should re-phrase this whole thing. Lets be honest, alot of the exhibits on that side of the zoo are far from being close to par. In closing these "crap" exhibits, there opening up new space that can become world class zoo exhibits. Some fo the exhibits on that side of the zoo are good (Otter Outpost, ExxonMobil Tiger Habitat) but others like The Hill and many other areas are far from suitable andf need an update or a bulldoze
