Dallas Zoo Dallas Zoo News 2010

No plans for a bull as all elephants are non-breeders. You can't breed elephants that are older than about 25 for physiological reasons. The exhibit can house a bull though in the future if needed.

Actually, they can breed female elephants over the age of 25, they just half to have had a calf before they were 25 and they must be in very healthy, reproductive condition

Cool video - thanks for the link.

I especially like when they are announcing the other animals that will join the elephants and a popup of each animal appears as it is announced. So when they announce impalas, an ostrich picture shows up, and then they announce ostrich and a waterbuck picture shows up!

Still, the project is top notch. I really don't have time to add a trip to Dallas this year, but I am afraid you are going to try to make me. How can you be so cruel???

Another great link. Too bad whoever got the stock photo for the printed article doesn't know the difference between an asian and african elephant.

I agree, the amount of misinformation in media regarding marine mammals and captive methods during the recent SeaWorld tragedy was astounding!

I love the shot of the elephant reaching its trunk up to the tree.

It kills me that I cannot afford to go to Dallas this summer to see it. (But I am sure I will live, since the reason I cannot afford it is I am going to Spain to look for Iberian Lynx and then on to France and England :)).

Such a shame AD, I'm sure you would enjoy it. After spending a bit of time on site of GotS now I can say that this video looks almost exactly like what is really there. Only thing the video shows that isn't there is the lushness of the plants that is to come and a future event center for formal meetings.

Saw a posting on the Zoo's Facebook page today talking about the new Zebras for the Savanna. Turns out I was wrong all along and they pulled something out of left field. Hartmann's mountain Zebra. That's right, all 3 species of Zebra are now at the zoo.

I went and saw it today (jbnbsn99, I heard you doing your tour, but I didn't have time to take it, sorry).

It was REALLY nice exhibit. Giant size, enough room for anything. Since I don't work for the Dallas Zoo, I'll say what I have heard while there.

-Yes, Mountain Zebra are coming although they are not yet on exhibit and won't be when it opens.
-50/50 chance impala make the exhibit by opening next week, not guaranteed.
-Ostrich, Elephant, and Giraffe are currently separated, including 2 of the elephants separated from the rest. Jenny (the original Dallas Zoo elephant) doesn't seem to play nice with others, even though she is currently with Gina. The plan is mixing all the elephants, then mixing the giraffes, then mixing the zebra, et. all.
-Cheetah and Lion exhibits could be bigger or more impressive in some ways.

Ummm . . . GO SEE IT! It's great.

EXCELLENT ARTICLE!!! It mentions another feature that I don't think we have heard about yet. Trained african birds from Steve Martin's bird trainers will fly over the exhibit periodically - adding to the appearance of being in wild Africa. This is going to be incredible!!!

I also like the quote at the end from Dallas staff saying they are trying not to overpromote it. The qoute is something to the effect of you don't call your own exhibit world-class, you let other people give it that title. I think the self-proclaimed "World Famous San Diego Zoo" could learn something from this :p.

I went to Steve's talk to the zoo employees last week and from what he said the bird fly overs will also include East African Crowned Cranes and Marabou Storks.
