Dallas Zoo Dallas Zoo News 2012

yeah this sounds weird but our herd is young and mostly new after our old herd died but they are "relatives" of our old herd. Is that also normal? Like our old female Juno our current females are her nieces that were born at other facilities and our male is a cousin of our old male Morefu.
 
So Edward the one that was put down was identified in the press release as a Baringo (which is Rothschild) was he likely pure or a Rothtic hybrid?

And why do they do this with giraffe?
 
Baringo=Rothschild=Nubian.
Most likely, if they claimed he was a Roths, then chances are he was. Best way I've found is to look at the face. If it is a pure Retic, or close to a pure retic, then the top of the face will be quite dark. If the face is lighter in color, then it has a fair amount of Roths in it. I personally have never seen a 100% confirmed pure Retic, but I have seen 100% Roths.

Baringo=Rothschildt's giraffe Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi

However, the Nubian giraffe is Giraffa camelopardalis camelopardalis (nominate race). So, your info was not 100% correct.

According to new taxonomy and Giraffe Working Group several like Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata are now full species (so, Giraffa reticulata).

I'm going off of Groves and Grubb 2011 which synonimizes camelopardalis and rothschildi. They find no absolute difference in the two other than slight differences in pelage coloration.
 
Makes sense then. Probably a pure Roths. An older animal will have a large, well-developed 3rd ossicone, and that animal has an almost non-existent one.

When are they going to do the elephant giraffee intros ? Where did you get that info ? Do you go to the Birmingham Zoo alot ? Just wondering hope to here from you.
 
I meant that will probably happen sometime far in the future if they are following Dallas's plan. They may never because of the bull thing.
 
-Giraffe introductions with the elephants are in full swing. A temporary hot wire fence has been set up in the elephant paddock so the giraffes can be close to the elephants with out necessarily being in together yet.
-One of our thirteen giraffes, Jade, is scheduled to be bred soon.
-A male harpy eagle has arrived from Tulsa.
-Our silver back gorilla, Patrick, has integrated well with the Cincinnati females and according to a docent, breeding is now an option.
 
On August 25 the zoo will open during early evening hours for photo opportunities (for a somewhat pricey extra fee). Still it is nice to finally see a Texas zoo doing evening hours like many of my Arizona facilities do.

During regular hours that day they also have an all day guided photo workshop, so serious photogs can do both and shoot from dawn to dusk if they like.

For the 3rd consecutive year Dallas Zoo has broken its all-time attendance record, and with the additions of Giants of the Savanna, a new bird show and koalas this zoo has created a large number of jobs and gone from strength to strength since becoming privatized. It is almost a disappointment that 2013 will bring nothing but picnic tables and a mini-train to the area that once housed the now demolished Large Mammals Building.

Yeah, I hear you on that. We need so many things. I work with the ungulates on the monorail side. There are some breeding's and moving new animals in and others out to help with breeding/per SSP recommendations. I'm trying to get a job there now, no luck so far, they are hiring from within so I've been told. Been volunteering for 6 months now. Gonna go for another 6 months and try again.
