Dallas Zoo Dallas Zoo News 2016

Sumatran tiger Menis has arrived from the Kansas City Zoo on breeding loan, for the SSP. He is eleven years old. Also, last year (wasn't in the other news thread) on December 9th, it was announced that Sukacita had arrived. She is two years old and came from Smithsonian's National Zoo.

How many tigers does the zoo now possess (both Malayan and Sumatran)?

Five Sumatran. No Malayan. Sukacita and Menis were paired by the SSP, but as far as I know, Menis is only here on loan.

Who is the 5th Sumatran? There's Menis and Sukacita. Kipling and Hadiah, who I'm told is Menis' sister, but from a different litter. Just curious. :)

I haven't any idea. Honestly those two were the only I knew about, but I knew they had four when Sukacita arrived.

The five tigers are... males Kipling and Manis and females Meladi, Hadiah and Sukacita. Kipling can mate with Meladi and Hadiah. Manis is to breed with Sukacita. Manis is indeed Hadiah's older full brother.

No problem. Give me an interesting task and I will try to scrounge something up.

Okay. Here you go. Hadiah was born at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. Menis came to Dallas from Kansas City Zoo. How old was he when he was moved there?

Not a very exciting piece of information to research, but I'm curious to know. And was there anything unusual about his early development? Hadiah had to be mostly hand-raised because her mom wasn't interested in her when she was born and that ended up causing breeding issues. When Hadiah was ready to breed, instead of showing interest to Jai (Phx Zoo), she would show to the keepers and chase Jai off.

Menis was probably around one year old because in the Facebook post, the Dallas Zoo said he was exploring the largest habitat he'd had in 10 years, and he is 11 years old.

Manis was born at Woodland Park Zoo in September 2004 and moved to Kansas in 2006 with his brother Langka. They went on exhibit in Kansas in April 2006, but arrived there around February or March. So around 18 months old.

Thank you. That was the information I was looking for. :)

The Lego exhibit opens tomorrow. I won't be going for at least a week because of school, and the high is only 44 for Saturday.

Aaaaand the "activists" are already lining up at the door.

Regardless of what the zoo's web team says, there are baby elephants in the plan, but they want to wait and get the elephants accustomed to their habitat first. I've spoken to the CEO Gregg Hudson.

In a response to a comment on their Facebook post, the zoo said there would be an announcement next month (February). I presume it is the monorail, as it is basically complete already. Howeve, it could also be habitats for something big and gray that isn't an elephant which is also coming within the next few years.
