Five months later, he's finally on exhibit.
Zoo's FacebookWhat a heartbreaking day. We are devastated to share that we’ve lost Kona, one of our most beloved chimpanzees. The 7-year-old became ill and died during a diagnostic exam at our hospital Friday, despite an urgent resuscitation effort by our veterinary team.
Kona was born here in April 2009 to first-time parents Ramona and KC, and quickly became a visitor favorite because of his outgoing personality, swinging from trees, rolling down hills and swiping food from his elders. He also has been an excellent big brother to little Mshindi.
Ramona, KC, Mshindi and the other five chimps were allowed time with Kona after his death. All are doing well. We’ll keep a close eye on them, but animals are very resilient about loss, so we don’t expect any issues.
Our zookeepers, however, are incredibly close to the animals they serve, and they’re shattered. We know you in our community also have loved Kona since he was born, and that you share our grief. We appreciate any messages of support you’d like to leave here, and we’ll make sure Kona’s keepers see them.
I was a bit early on that. Adhama will be coming from LA, but the move has not yet occurred.According to the LA Zoo's Animal Transactions, 1.0 Nile hippo has arrived from LA. His name is Adhama, I believe.
In other news, 5 Sri Lankan pit vipers have hatched.
Quite sure this is a viviparous species, so the young should have been born, not hatched.
Even so, a nice result !
Agreed! Dallas Zoo's reptile programs are really taking off.
jbnbsn99 or another Texas regular for that matter: I am trying to garner some more information on the (sub- for some) species of Galapagos tortoise the Dallas Zoo maintains????
The current group here numbers 3.4 individuals. Any more detailed info on individual personae, details whence they came from or the species make up is much appreciated!!!
