Dallas Zoo Dallas Zoo News 2023

Dallas Zoo received a new male Perentie named Han Solo on May 4th. He came all the way from a zoo in the EAZA and represents a new bloodline for the US Perentie breeding program

Shoot! Now this is fricking awesome news. Great to see a zoo actually get new bloodline rather than give up (easy thing to do) to assure a captive population. Glad to see a serious effort put into a species other than usual ABC species every zoo shares.

Some updates from my visit yesterday that I don't believe have been mentioned yet. The reptile house has a host of new species such as Sunda Ratsnake and the return of Black Tree Monitors including some really rare species such as Dusky Gopher Frog, Gray's Monitor, and Spiny Hill Turtle. The new Perentie was out on exhibit this day aswell. In the African aviary the Bee-eaters are already gone sadly, aswell as the green pigeons. The White-Cheeked Turaco from the children's zoo aviary has moved into this exhibit. Signage for the Lappet-Faced Vultures was gone so they might have also left the collection aswell, the small aviary before the Klipspringer habitat was also empty with signage removed. I plan to do a full species list later in the week after I organize all my photos.

Gray's Monitor! First saw them in LA Zoo. Good to see species branching out. North Carolina Zoo has the. Saw one in Brookfield Zoo Chicago just day before total society shut down.

Dallas had Gray’s monitors years ago - I saw them there back in 2008 when they were one of the only holders- but they were off exhibit then. It’s great that this species is getting more exposure and some breeding success is being had
