Dallas Zoo Dallas Zoo News 2024

The Zoo has asked for a $30 million bond from the city council. The funds would be used for a number of new projects, including a parking garage, and a safari section (reopening the monorail area?) highlighted by a mixed-species habitat with rhinos and cheetahs.

Dallas Zoo asks city council for $30M allocation from bond money for new projects
I really hope this passes, Dallas had been stagnant when it comes to new exhibits for a long time. We got some cool new species like African Painted Dogs, Cape Porcupines, DeBrazza's Monkeys, and Maned Wolves but they all went into empty pre-existing habitats, so new habitats and species would be very exciting!

though, i'd be nervous exhibiting rhinos and cheetahs in the same habitat, one spooked rhino could equal a seriously injured cheetah...or worse

Rhino/cheetah has been done a handful of times at various zoos, and while it doesn't seem like it'd work, it surprisingly has worked rather well. Steve Taylor, retired director of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, actually cites that combination as being one of his favorites for a mixed species exhibit in his memoir.

As a former DFW local, I really hope that the Zoo is able to pull much of this plan off and reinvigorate itself after years of gridlock and after the nightmare that was the animal theft scandal. Many locals have turned to making the 30+ minute drive to Fort Worth in recent years due to the lack of progress compared to Fort Worth's seemingly never-ending construction of new exhibits. While I still find some of the individual exhibits at Dallas to be more impressive/better from an animal welfare standpoint, it is hard to deny the stagnation. I will say that several of the plans shared in these documents are pushing two years old or older and are from several animal management teams ago, so as with any plan, the final product might look quite a bit different than what is shared here.

For a lot of callitrichids, twins are a lot more common than single births. Of course it's still great for Dallas Zoo that this pair has been successful breeding three years in a row, but that isn't exactly unusual, and it's certainly not unusual that they've been twins.
