I thought that I would start a thread where I can post news from the danish zoos. Here is the first one:

Polar bear born in Aalborg Zoo
On December 7th the female polar bear Victoria in Aalborg Zoo gave birth to two cubs. Unforntunately one of them did not survive but the second one is doing fine. She is currently huddled up with the cub in her den. The polar bears in Aalborg Zoo are:

Victoria: Born i Rostock Zoo December 12th, 1996. She came to Aalborg Zoo on July 22nd, 1998.

Malik: Born in Aalborg Zoo December 19th, 2000. Father Nanok and Nuka are both dead now.

Felix: Born in Vienna Zoo November 24th, 2001. He came to Aalborg Zoo via Karlsruhe and Tierpark Nürnberg on April 1st, 2008. Felix is the father of the famous Flocke, born in Nürnberg Zoo December 11th 2007, and of course also the new born in Aalborg.

Malik was the last polar bear born in Aalborg. Ever since Nanok died Aalborg had been without a male. Looks like Felix didn't waste any time, since the babies are born only 9 months after his arrival;)

The other female, Malik, is also pregnant at the moment, so Aalborg Zoo can expect even more polar bear cubs.

Interesting, but couldn´t this become a problem as well? Both females having cubs and then there is the male. I know that the exhibit can be divided into two separate enclosures, but still....
 
Yes, it is sort of a population boom:p I think that the two females should be able to share one part of the exhibit with their cubs.

If not, I guess a possibillity would be to send Felix on a holiday to the Scandinavian Wild Animal Park, which is located only 90 kilometers (55 miles) from Aalborg Zoo. Guess we will have to wait and see...
 
Copenhagen Zoo - Ape Jungle renovation

By the way, I have some construction news from some other Danish zoos:

Copenhagen Zoo - Ape Jungle
Currently, a much needed renovation of Copenhagen Zoo's Ape Jungle is taking place. The current exhibits are open-topped and does therefore not offer many climbing opportunities. One of the three indoor exhibits for chimpanzees will therefore be netted on the top and have all new climbing frames. The chimpanzee exhibit under renovation has been separated from the rest of the building by a wooden wall. Here is a picture of the other chimpanzee exhibit where they reside at the moment. This used to be the gorilla exhibit until 1998.

Also, the building itself will be expanded with a new greenhouse for javan rhinoceros hornbills. Copenhagen sent theirs to the Netherlands a few years back and will be getting a new breeding couple when the exhibit is finished. Here is a picture of the place where the new hornbill greenhouse is being built.

I noticed this when I visited the zoo three or four weeks ago. Do you know when the work will be finished? I am looking forward to it, but pity the fact that the chimps in Copenhagen don´t have an outdoor enclosure. That is a scandal, really....
 
I believe the work will be finished some time during this winter.

About the chimps not having an outdoor enclosure, you should remember that these are former laboratory chimps. They have never been outside before and the space given in Copenhagen are way more than they have ever experienced.
 
First news of the year

Here are the first zoo-news from Denmark in 2008 :)

Copenhagen Zoo breaks visitor record!
Copenhagen Zoo has just anounced that their visitor numbers for 2008 have been the highest yet in the zoo's history. In 2008 Copenhagen Zoo recieved almost exactly 1,4 million visitors. Last time the visitor numbers were above 1,3 million were in 1952, 1953 and 1954, with the opening of the Bear Caves and the new extension area.

This year it is no-doubt because of the new Hippo House, Savannah and of course the Elephant House. There are also unconfirmed whispers that after The Arctic Circle, the next project in the zoo will be a large walkthrough aviary for flamingoes and other birds.


New animals in Jesperhus Junglezoo
Jesperhus Junglezoo has a new website online and has announced a few new species now living in the zoo:
- Bush dogs have now moved into one of the outdoor exhibits.
- Red-necked wallabies now live free ranging in the Australia hall.
- The squirrel monkeys have been let back into the South America hall. They were previously removed from the hall because of too much "unwanted interaction" with the visitors.
- The cotton-top tamarins have switched places with the squirrel monkeys.
 
Just as pleased as you, Toddy, about the new record for Copenhagen Zoo!

Haven´t been there for a while, though. Is the work still going on renovating the chimp exhibit or is it finished?

Will probably go there this weekend or the next.
 
Also, Toddy, I had no idea that the chimps at Copenhagen Zoo were former laboratory victims.

Thanks for pointing that out - it does make a difference!
 
@Dan: I presume that the chimpanzee exhibit renovation won't be done until at least after the winter months. I believe I heard a rumour about March... I will keep you updated:)

I am very excited to see how it will look as I have not seen the detailed plans of either the chimpanzee or the hornbill exhibit.

aalborg zoo closure

There is arumour going around that they are planning to extend that ugly hospital in aalborg & use the land the zoo is on.

Could someone let me know if this is true

@stephend: I don't believe that will ever happen unless they decide to move the whole zoo. And it and has never been the zoo's nor the city's plan to do so.

The ugly hospital is a special hospital for mentally ill people. A woman from the hospital once jumped into the bear grotto (when they had one) in an attempt of suicide. The bears got so scared that they ran to the far end of the grotto and stayed there:p

Thanks for that reply. Just that someone has started something on face book asking people to join him in trying to "besvar" the zoo. Lived in denmark for 5 years & have spent many hours at the zoo. First time to see a real polar bear. Not many in england

Copenhagen Zoo news

The possums are back!
Two Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) have just moved into an exhibit in the Nocturnal House in Copenhagen. A single individual used to live here until about two years ago, but now the possums are back. Virginia opossums are very rare in European zoos and according to the Zootierliste they can only be found one other place in Europe.

Chimpanzee update
The renovation of the chimpanzee exhibit is going according to plan and now you can actually get an idea of how it is going to look.
 
You didn´t, by any chance, take a picture or two of the on-going renovation?

Yes, I can see very clearly now that the mesh will make it possible to arrange for much better climbing possibilities in this part of the exhibit. I hope that the zoo goes absolutely wild about this and put in as much stuff as possible. The chimps will love that!

I certainly look forward to see this renovation completed! :)
 
I hope that they don't close and move the Aalborg Zoo. Viisted it in the early 1970's remember a very Savannnah enclosure there at the far end of the zoo. Would be a real shame if they did move it, although as we all know exhibits can be copied and upgraded in the process, but somehow they lose their "old world" charm in the process.
Do you ever pick up brochures, guides or postcards on your travels Toddy as I would be interested in adding to my Danish collection of them.
