@twycrosszoo: The savannah still exists and is one of the best in Denmark. They have now built a new African Village with indoor stalls for the savannah animals that is accessible for the visitors.

Yes, I always make sure to collect two to three brochures from every zoo I visit. I have archives of brochures from the Danish zoos strecthing 12 years back:) I buy guides whenever they are available but the concept has still not caught on in many of the Danish zoos.
 
News from the zoos

Copenhagen Zoo
The renovation of the chimpanzee exhibit is now almost finished, as well as the new aviary for javan rhinoceros hornbills. I will post a complete review of the new and improved Ape Jungle once it is done.
Also, a new baby pure-bred reticulated giraffe has been born. It is the second baby born within the newly formed breeding group.

Odense Zoo
The construction has now finaly begun for the new Kiwara theme in Odense Zoo. It was supposed to have opened this summer but building permits could not be aquired in time. The first phase is the largest aviary in Northern Europe for various African wetland birds such as flamingoes and pelicans. The aviary will open in October 2009. The brand new and huge savannah area with new stables and enclosures for giraffes, zebras, ostriches, antelopes and nile crocs (among others) will open in the summer of 2010.

Aalborg Zoo
Five little warthogs and a baringo giraffe has been born in Aalborg Zoo. The giraffes in Aalborg have always been very productive and adding a lot to the EEP.

Crocodile Zoo
Crocodile Zoo, the place with the largest collection of crocodilians in Europe (21 species), is currently building new exhibits for gharials and black caimans. These new exhibits will be the most spacious and naturalistic in the zoo to date. Crocodile Zoo breeds many of their endangered croc-species and does a huge conservation effort with gharials and phillippine crocodiles as well as others.

I saw the cute little giraffe kid last weekend! Wonderful! Took pictures with my lousy cell phone camera but they became all blurred...

I had never heard about that Crocodile Zoo until you mentuioned it. I checked out their web site but it didn´t contain much info.

Have you been there and if so: do you have any pictures to show?
 
@Dan: Yes, I have been to Crocodile Zoo myself twice and know the owner. I have started a new thread with info about the zoo here.
 
News from the zoos

It's time for another news report from the Danish zoos:

Copenhagen Zoo
The newly renovated chimpanzee exhibit is set to open next Wednesday (the 8th). I will post a review with some photos of it then. The zoo also opens an aniversary exhibition (Copenhagen Zoo turns 150 this year) and an exhibition about European predators (the new EAZA campaign).

Odense Zoo
The first west african chimpanzee in Odense Zoo has been born. The zoo has held chimpanzees since 1999 and they have bred before but this is the first genetically pure west african chimp born at the zoo. Odense Zoo has also received a pure-bred reticulated giraffe from Rotterdam to acompany their lone male. They hope to start a breeding herd within the next few years.

Aalborg Zoo
Another baringo giraffe has been born at the zoo. They just keep breeding! Also, the little polar bear born in December is now playing outside. Its name will be revealed later today.

Ree Park
The new giraffes in Ree Park now walks freely on the savannah. Two of them are already expected to give birth within a very short time.

Skaerup Zoo
New and rare species have arrived at the park for the 2009 season: the only red river hogs and Chinese leopard cats found in Scandinavia as well as caracals and servals. The zoos' main focus is now primates/lemurs and small cats.
 
Excellent news about the chimp exhibit in Copenhagen. Please write a detailed review an post many pictures, Toddy! Will go and check it out as soon as I have a chance.
 
Also: thanks for the thread about the Crocodile Zoo. For some stupid reason I had not seen it.

Do you know the sire and dam for the new reticulated giraffe birth?
Which reticulated giraffe (date of birth, sex) are currently at the zoo?

Any news on the current white rhino pregnancy?
 
Ape Jungle completed

The renovation of part of the Ape Jungle in Copenhagen Zoo is now complete. Pictures will follow soon:) However, I was mistaking when saying that the new aviary would display Javan rhinoceros hornbills. Instead it now houses trumpeter hornbills which are also much better suited to an aviary of that size. I belive the plan still is to exhibit Javan rhinoceros hornbills so I will keep you posted once I learn more.

@Kifaru Bwana: The father of the new giraffe is the only bull in the enclosure, Oliver. I am 95% sure that the mother is Camilla, the so-far only breeding cow.

The white rhinoceros female unfortunately had a miscarriage so the project was a failure. According to the zoo they might attempt artificial insamination once more.

Regarding the reticulated giraffe: can you post the names, origins and dates of birth?

The youngest females are ex my hometown zoo in Amsterdam, so no great surprise there. But I would like to know the parentage of the original breeding pair and their offspring!!! :confused:

Oliver - Breeding male, origin unknown.
Camilla - Breeding female, origin unknown.
Lien - Female, born in Artis, came to Copenhagen in 2008.
Jeanet - Female, born in Artis, came to Copenhagen in 2008.
Unknown - Male, born in Copenhagen in 2007, mother is Camilla.
Unknown - Female, born in Copenhagen in 2009, mother is Camilla.

Ree Park - Cheetah cubs
Ree Park has now done it again. The cheetah Toscha in Ree Park recently gave birth to no less than five healthy cubs. Very unusal was it that Toscha completely dismissed the keepers and gave birth in the outdoor exhibit instead of the indoor nursing room. Toscha had her first litter two years ago.
Ree Park now keeps 25 cheetahs and is one of the absolute best breeding centres for cheetahs in Europe. It all started with a few cheetahs back in 2003. Later, some was imported from Africa and since 2005 no less than 15 young cheetahs have been born at the park.
 
I'm happy to hear all these positive news from Denmark. Aalborg Zoo has a special place in my heart as it was the first real zoo that I visited (the first at all, if one does not count a small menagerie here in Iceland that closed in the 1980s and became famous for catching orcas) at the age of 5 in 1986 on my first visit abroad with my parents. Copenhagen Zoo was a mecca for me. I visited it first in 1995 at the age of 14 after wanting to do so for 10 years, or since my father gave me a large collection of photos he had taken there in the 1970s :) Shame that I have not been to Aalborg since 2002, and not to Copenhagen since 2004, by which the work on the massive elephant exhibit had begun and in my memory many exhibits were empty and not attractive. But the polar bear exhibit in Aalborg serves as one of my favourite exhibits, it is better than some built in the same period I have seen in the States.

The new Africa project is Odense Zoo is called Kiwara and is split into two parts. The free-flight aviary will be Northern Europes largest and built next to the chimpanzees. Here pelicans, flamingoes, helmeted guineafowl and more will live.

The new savannah and houses for giraffes, zebras, antelopes, ostriches and nile crocodiles will be built where the current Okavango theme is now. Exactly which species will live there is not certain except for reticulated giraffes, grevy's zebras and nile crocodiles.
 
News flash

Okay, it's time for more zoo news!

Copenhagen Zoo
The good news form here is that Copenhagen Zoo has recieved a new male african jacana. The last one died a few years ago and since then our female has been living alone. Hopefully, these two will prove to be as efficient at breeding as the last pair, since this species is not very common in zoos.

The bad news is that the bull giraffe Oliver is dead. He took a bad fall inside the house and could not be rescued. He was no young man but should still have fathered a few more calves. Especially now that Copenhagen has three females with very important genes in the EEP population.


Ree Park
The first kalahari lion has arrived in Ree Park! It is a young male from Basel named Eisi. For the moment he will be living with a bunch of zoo-lions until his African ladies arrive. The new exhibit for kalahari lions in Ree Park will be top-notch, very modern and about one hectare in size (about as big as the lion exhibit in Wuppertal).
 
Unfortunately no. I am VERY exited to see it myself. I know where it will be placed and that it is a very hilly terrain. The exhibit will be 1 hectare big and centered around a kopje.

Oliver was born in Dvur Kravole in 1990 and was called Mitrin, too. He arrived in 1992.

Camilla was born in Munich in 2003. There she was called Dumela. She arrived in 2005.
