2024 has got off to a good start for the Darling Downs Zoo.

The zoo has welcomed another Zebra foal, another Blackbuck fawn. Red Handed Tamarin Triplets. baby Brazilian Agoutis and Joeys for Squirrel Gliders, Quokka, Rufous, Tammer Wallaby, Agile Wallaby and Red Kangaroo.

Especially, happy for zebra foal (pure-bred) and local native squirrel gliders and quokka.

This is the zoo’s third zebra foal in the space of a few months, with this filly joining two other fillies born in September and October.

It’s encouraging to see the hard work that went into importing them paying off with continued breeding success. :)

First Project of 2024

Darling Downs Zoo has posted the following on socials today regarding their first project of 2024:

2024 is going to be a great year for the Darling Downs Zoo and this slab of concrete is just the beginning. Does anybody have any ideas as to what our first project may be about?

It doesn’t look like a massive exhibit (e.g. for an ungulate species), so my guess is it’s a De Brazza’s exhibit.
Aaaa

Does anybody know when the De Brazza’s Monkey will arrive?

I don’t believe a date has been announced yet; but according to the zoo’s socials, construction has recommenced on this project following a spate of wet weather. They’re inviting guesses of what species it could be for; and since I originally guessed De Brazza’s, I’ll be interested to see if I’m right.

Thank you!
I live near Darling Downs but I have seen these animals are Tasmania Zoo and they were very entertaining. Cannot wait until they arrive!

How many Caracal does this leave DDZ with?
They should have a pair (Fane and Lupa).

Not sure but they did acquire two pairs back in 2021 which have since bred.

Darling Downs Zoo imported 3.2 Caracal in June 2021, from which 1.0 was transferred to Hunter Valley Zoo.

3.0 kittens were born at Darling Downs Zoo in December 2021.

1.0 has now been exported to Hamilton Zoo.

Visited Darling Downs Zoo today a few little updates

  • A Major Mitchell’s cockatoo is now on display in one of the avaries at the entrance.
  • Between the capuchin enclosure and macaw avaries is a very intriguing mixed exhibit of wallaby and an Indian star tortoise.
  • The young komodo dragon is no longer in the reptile house and the space the komodo dragons were held is under renovation along with another adjacent enclosure I assume for green aconda and green iguanas respectively.
  • The enclosure outside the reptile house is now split into two ends with the rhinoceros iguanas on one and the one closest to the reptile house undergoing some renovation
  • The new Baboon enclosure is looking fairly good the night quarters seem to be mostly completed with Cape Barren geese and Australian bustards living I assume temporarily in the area.
  • I haven't been able to figure what the current construction project next to the gibbons is though there was a swimming pool fenced up around there which I found odd later on at the current komodo dragon enclosure I noted that it said that the new enclosure would have pools so I'd believe that this may be for the komodo dragons.
  • The leopard cubs were up and active which was a joy.
  • At the Baboon feed the keeper mentioned the younger boys have been separated from the girls with the breeding male off display exactly where the youngster males are I'm not sure of though I noticed a crate with auckland zoos logo on it, now I reckon that they may be looking at exporting some animals to auckland zoo despite the apparent planned phase out.
  • I was told that the zoo has three (1.2) breeding Dumeril's boa off show with plans to breed again this year.
I will post some photos later tonight.

All in all some nice new developments, especially with regards to some of the herps (star tortoise, rhino iguana, Komodo dragon and ... yay ... Dumeril's boas, a constricting snake and very attractive snake species from Madagascar (wonder where these came in from..., but someone has got to do it!).

Thanks a lot for this update @Patrick Keegan

I know Auckland Zoo were previously looking at exporting their female baboons to Singapore Zoo (prior to Covid), so I actually wouldn’t be surprised if some of their females had been sent to DDZ.

Auckland Zoo has the following young females:

0.1 Naeemah (2011) Afar x Kito
0.1 Zala (2013) Wasaro x Ayisha
0.1 Mali (2015) Wasaro x Ayisha
0.1 Iniko (2020) Yafeu x Mali

That would indeed make sense as the crates were Auckland Zoo labelled. May also explain the breeding male being off display!

I can (unfortunately) confirm Auckland Zoo are phasing out baboons. I spoke to a keeper a few weeks ago.

Due to the age of the two older females, I imagine it’d be kindest to let them live out their remaining years at Auckland. The two eldest males are in the same boat.

Optimistically the prime aged male (Badi) and the juvenile (Jabari) could either enter a breeding troop (if a new one were to be formed) or a bachelor troop; though options for both are extremely limited.

@ApeLadyNZ, you might be able to find out more on your next visit.
