I had my annual pilgrimage to Darling Downs Zoo today, a bit later than usual in the year, but continuously an excellent trip. As always, I thank Steve and Steph for their hospitality and congratulate them on their hard effort to continue developing a high-quality experience. Some of my observations/news do note might of happened months ago but I am only seeing them now. I will upload more photos over the coming days:
- the female Golden Lion Tamarin has arrived from France and successfully been mixed with the new male from Colchester. They are mixed with the Common Marmosets and Brazilian Agouti. There is another lion tamarin pair with the Pygmy Marmosets.
- a male Black-necked Stork has arrived and is currently housed in a fence-offed section behind the pelican.
- a whopping five species of wallaby now reside in the paddock next to the Siamang with the addition of Whiptail and Tammar Wallaby (with joeys) along with the growing population of Agile Wallaby, Red-necked Wallaby and Swamp Wallaby.
- three Bush Stone-Curlew chicks have very recently hatched. One with the Gang-gang Cockatoos and two with the all the ground-doves. There were other pairs on eggs still.
- a new set of Cottontop Tamarins were starting to venture further from their adults. One of the on-show pairs of Red-handed Tamarins also had some young twins. Pygmy Marmosets had young also.
- I noticed a Centralian Bluetongue among the lizard pit with the shingleback, common bluetongues and bearded dragons. A species I haven’t seen at the zoo before.
- a male Fallow Deer is now with the female Red Deer.
- at least three Alexandrine Parakeets have been added to the final aviary row next to the admin building which were seen with a male Indian Ringneck and Blue-fronted Amazon.
- Satin Bowerbird has been added to the aviary between the lions. I finally saw a Red-whiskered Bulbul in this aviary for a flash second. A few new/returning columbids were relished – a pair of Rose-crowned Fruit-Doves and a big group of White-breasted Ground-Doves that have already been mentioned earlier.
- a new paddock has been opened opposite the giraffe which has Ostrich currently. The new Zebra foal was excellent to see.
- a great little extension has been added to the tropical reptile house with Radiated Tortoise and the Rhino Iguana hatchlings in a fifth enclosure next to Bakti, the Komodo from the reptile park. One of the imported male Yellow Anacondas is now on-show as well.
- the new penguins and hyenas were great to see. Additional penguins have since arrived from Billabong Zoo.
- lots of wildlife today at the zoo – highlight was Zebra Finches and Yellow-rumped Thornbills with the zebras. Butterflies were out as well with Australian Pained Lady and Lesser Wanderer being abundant.
