Darling Downs Zoo Darling Downs Zoo news

Does the zoo have true Grant's Zebra or some of the many Burchell's-Grant's hybrids which get labeled as Grant's in the US?

Darling Downs Zoo have hinted an exciting new arrival. They have provided a few clues and a photo on their Facebook page. It looks like a species of ungulate, perhaps Nyala or Eland.
We have some VERY exciting news!
Can you guess our latest arrival at the zoo❓

A beautiful redhead, I weigh in at about 60kg.

By this time next year I'll have doubled my size!

I don’t want to dampen any excitement about new species but in my opinion that picture has be a giraffe nose for sure! I’d say they would be struggling to move any species, especially an ungulate, interstate with all the border closers in place at the moment. My guess is that the new arrival would be a baby giraffe, who do have a red/orange patch or hair on their heads.

I believe you have nailed it the weight would be about right for a baby Giraffe

I didn’t even think of that! The zoo’s first giraffe birth would be equally as exciting news.

Darling Downs Zoo have released another image of the new arrival (a close-up of its eye) and mentioned a 15-month gestation. Almost certainly a giraffe calf. Wonderful news for the zoo and it's great they have experienced breeding success despite only having had Giraffe since December 2016.

Our final clue before the big reveal tomorrow!

Any more guesses who I am?! The zookeepers have been waiting 15months for me, so one more day won't hurt!

Not as good as I was expecting but still an outstanding achievement for the zoo nonetheless.

As stated on the zoos website they want Bongo, Nyala and White rhino but until importation changes happen and Covid problems change some wanted species will time some time to sort!
It is a question of massaging authorities into action! The entire process needs speeding up, been talked about for years without any constructive developments. It certainly does not seem to be high on the Government's list of priorities.

I agree but I can not see this happening I also believe they appear to be able to only work on one IRA at a time!
