Dartmoor Zoo Dartmoor Zoo news 2024

Successful lynx introduction:

Flaviu (2014) and Emily (2016) have been successfully introduced; with hopes for kittens later this year:

Dartmoor Zoo 'delighted' after successful bonding of Lynx pair
There is hopeful anticipation that the pair could welcome their first litter of kittens as early as June this year, marking a significant milestone in the zoo's breeding program.
Another breeding pair for Carpathian Lynx. The female came in from Karlsruhe Zoo and at 7,5 still has a good few years to produce cubs at Dartmoor. It is probable any cubs might be transferred for release projects as the Carpathian subspecies is under significant threat and restoring its populations in central and south-eastern Europe is a main focus for Rewilding programs on the Continent.

On May 18th, the zoo announced that a capybara was born which is on exhibit.

Good morning,

My revent visit to the zoo I have heard some very interesting info from staff there.

DZS have been trying to keep a secret...well the cats out the bag literally.

They have baby lynx kittens....born to new mother they got in from Germany recently in January.

Also the whole secret of new animals coming to the zoo are collared peccary to go where the goats used to be. My visit recently I still questions the size of the exhibit they will be in and I do hope that beautiful turkey oak isn't harmed as they cause lots of damage to trees and shrubs.

Good day,

Good news for Dartmoor, but from a personal point of view I find it disappointing that Dudley have lost a rarity!
I presume the three males are all castrated so they will need to import a fresh male if they ever want to breed them. Would they make that effort though? -or is all the fanfare just publicity...

Just curious to know... You know the cheetah at Dartmoor zoo, is Baro a South African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) or a Sudan cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus soemmeringii)?

Thought I'd ask since ZTL lists both subspecies in the current inventory for this collection.
