Dartmoor Zoo Dartmoor Zoo

Did autumnwatch feature the European beavers at the highland wildlife park?

is this at the wildfowl trust property at martin mere? are they semi-wild or are they in a zoo type enclosure? are they going to be reintroduced to the wild?

The beavers are there to show the public basically what beavers actually look like, and gives them an Idea of what would happen if they were reintroduced. I'm a member of the WWT, so I'll have a look in the magazines.

Highly Experienced!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bless you my love, so green! They have changed the name of Dartoor, not the staff!!!
Unless Bicton (thats the local agri college) is running 10 second NVQs, there isnt much certificate wise up there, unless you count driving licences!

Thanks Liz, we have changed the staff (mostly)
We have many new staff with degrees and masters degrees, and considerable amounts of zoo-keeping experience.

Thats so right anna,
it says on the DZP website that your first keeper went off to school in september!
I only just found that out tho, so forgive my need to correct.

yep, we are training existing staff, but there are new staff with relevant qualifications and experience

I dont see the big problem with animals ending up in private keepers hands, its sad that people seem to tar every private keeper by the small minority of irresponsible keepers, there are private keepers here in the UK with the knowledge and conditions to rival zoos, these animals primates and exotic mammals should not be sold from pet shops to anyone that wants them, but privately and responsibly for people with genuine passion for keeping animals.

I know a lot af private keepers, and I agree many of their animals are exhibited in much better ways. I feel this is because it is harder for private keepers to get many of their animals, compared to zoological collections (something dies, it just gets replaced), there for, in many cases, better care is taken.

I sent this before but then decided to remove it.
I have put it back on after seeing bens zoo. before you all have a pop at me. I suggest you read the original thread posted by her on this Stating, experienced, Qualified staff.

Kiruna.

May I remind you that your own place had a few animal escapes before you were even opened or has that been forgotten (Jaguar and Wolf).

(highly experienced staff......Yet not one of you thought about bringing the crate to the tiger (bens zoo pt2).

And as for letting two wolves fight for dominance. when you already knew the old one wouldn't win as it was on its last legs and then to show it lying there dying, (baring in mind you had parted them and then put them back togethter to fight it out, was like 'yeah we let Parker finish the job'.

I, along with several other keepers, were qualified to do our jobs and
we did them well, staying late at night, some times all night if
needed.

Our enclosures were cleaned daily and enrichment was provided as well as correct diets, and appropriate veterinary attention.(I've read several of your posts).

What I do not expect from some one obviously as clever as yourself is
to go around slagging off keepers, many of which have passed through
Dartmoor at one time or another, and currently work within other
collections, to the best of their abilities. Especially as the current
owners as well as yourselves have only just got the park re-opened
(which I do congratulate you all for as I would hate to see the park
gone for good) and will one day be looking to other collections for
stock.

I dont think I need to tell you that this is probably not the best way
to make new friends in the zoo industry especially as it is not you
that people will remember, it's the zoo and it's owners (the innocent ones) that will be remembered.

If I (a lowly in-experienced keeper with 15 years knowledge behind me
as well as three relevent qualifications (including the zoo one), find
what you write to be offensive then imagine what those that read this
and are higher up than I must think

Yes, Hadley. This was posted once before.
However I felt the need to repost it with some added comments. (look at bens zoo, what a joke).
