Buffy Fish Owl is an attractive large owl species from SE Asia. It is kept only by a few zoos and private keepers in Europe. It breeds here only rarely and the future of the captive population doesnt look good.

In order to improve breeding, the Prague zoo decided to arrange a dating agency for them. European zoos were offered that they can send their lone birds and nonbreeding pairs here. The birds get a subspecies assessment first. And then a potentional new partner is introduced to them in order to create harmonious new pairs.

So far, Pairi Daiza, Walsrode, Köln and Monticelli (if I noticed them correctly) have sent their birds. There are also young birds bred at Prague in the mix, looking for a spouse.

Prague zoo has a good breeding pair of Burma origin. Currently, there is a January chick in the nesting box.

In the 1980-ties or 1990-ties Birdpark Avifauna did the same with Great Indian Hornbills but I don't know if this was succesfull and also I don't know how long this dating agency existeed...

This is great to see zoos working together in a common interest for such a great species! Fingers crossed! Thanks for the info Jana!
