You are correct. The Oxford dictionary:- "An establishment that keeps wild animals for study, conservation or display to the public". I have always thought that any collection of wild animals would be a zoo--obviously I have been wrong!

You made me curious. So ponds at St. James Park and Regent's Park in London are zoos, and they run some quite complicated accteditation/inspection procedures? And the same is true about innumberable public parks which keep some exotic waterfowl?
