Hello ZooChat!

Since this is a very international forum, I would love some help from you all. I myself am from Denmark and need to find out what my country/peoples' reputation is internationally.

If you could just write down the first few key words that comes to mind when you think of Denmark and the Danes, I would really appreciate it. Anything at all that you can think of.

Thanks!:)

femoghalvfems. Very strange language, I think. A small country with many good zoos, of course!

(I remember femoghalvfems, after Sweden's biggest train company has been advertising: go to Copenhagen , only "femoghalvfems") (=

Hjemme! That's a danish word my boss put on his house to please his danish friends ( and to confuse the local people who wonder what it means).

Pondus

:)

Vikings, Beowulf, Danish pastries, Sandi Toksvig, Lego, Bohr(physicist), Gram (staining), Hans Christian Andersen, Karen Blixen, most content people in Europe according to one survey, nation with the fewest church-goers in another (those last two might be related).

Peter Schmeichel, Thomas Sorensen (i'm a football fan;))

and Jan Molby of course

Great people most of whom speak English , many great animal collections, Hans Christian Anderson, the little Mermaid, raw fish and lots of good beer. What more could you want.

Copenhagen Zoo (which was my first experience of Denmark, when I was five or six years old), Tuborg, Carlsberg, Smörrebröd, H C Anderson and Arne Jacobsen (architect, designer and genius).

I could go on about Denmark and tell the forum about the way Swedes in general adore Denmark so much it is almost silly - but I don´t want to feed Toddy´s ego that much...;):):D

It is a damned nice country though! I´ll tell you that much!

A gentleman named Axel who was a friend of my parents, an antique dealer and more than a little bit scatterbrained but entirely loveable.

Many thanks to you all for your replies! They have helped me a lot :)

So as far as I can see, the British seem to think that Denmark is a good/decent footbaling nation. Also bacon seems to ring a bell in England. It should, since our economy after the Napoleon wars was pretty much dependant on our skill of raising pigs and the British' love of bacon, creating valuable export.

Carlsberg and Tuborg are also mentioned, fitting well in with my countrys' long brewery traditions. Beer in particular is a part of the Danish culture.

Hans Christian Anderson is probably the most famous Dane ever and the little Mermaid will always be THE landmark of Copenhagen.

It means house, or welcome, I believe. I pass it every day when I go to work, and I know it's a danish word, so that's the first thing that comes to mind;)

"Hjemme" means "home", so it is a very suitable thing to write on your house;)

most content people in Europe according to one survey

I am glad that you mentioned that Pygathrix. Especially Americans and Brittish have a hard time understanding how the Danes can be so happy and content, when we pay 40 % of our income in taxes.

Once again, many thanks to you all!

My boss also wanted to try out if people would be able to translate it, since the local dialect is related to german and danish dialects. No tresspassers have figured it out however.

Well, if the government uses the tax income to the benefit of the people, even americans and british should understand why the danish are so content;)

Denmark is one of my favorites holiday countries, also friends of mine living there, and in may I go again, and I will try to visit a few zoo's too :)
