Denver Zoo Denver Zoo News 2017

I did the research last night and there are now 7 asiatic black bears in AZA facilities.

Though her death is sad and I will miss seeing her, I am curious on what they plan to do with their exhibit. I think the most likely thing is they will put one of their grizzly's in their, though my fingers are crossed for bringing a sloth bear to the zoo.

Sloth bear would be ideal.

Where are the 7? That seems quite low, considering that there were around 20 in AZA zoos just a year ago.

I'm against putting sloth bears in the exhibit because the grottoes in Bear Mountain are unlivable and really need to be torn down.

@Coelacanth18- I looked into the AZA Bear TAG's sloth bear files from 2013 then did the reasearch to find out which ones are still there. They are a phase-out species so it's unlikely other bears were added to the population. As of now there are asiatic black bears in CMZ, Milwaukee, Virginia Zoo, Little Rock, Philadelphia, and Roger Williams. It looks like I did my math wrong and there is actually 10.

@GraysonDP- I agree that as of now the exhibit is not completely up to standards with modern exhibits though I doubt they'd tear it down due to it's historical significance as the first exhibit to mimic an animal's natural habitat stateside.

Milwaukee's bear passed away in Spring.

Does CMZ stand for Cleveland Metroparks Zoo? I don't remember there being an Asiatic black bear there the past 8 years, unless it's been off exhibit. Right now they have grizzly, American black, sloth, Andean, and a sun bear (usually off exhibit).

I believe that in this case "CMZ" stands for the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, which does, indeed, house 0.2 Asiatic black bears.

Great that the 3 are now together, but why did it take that long to get there? European zoos seem to be very far ahead in this regard; males have shown to be much easier to integrate with each other if the age structure of the bulls involved is right (and the males are either young or of different age/ strength). There are a lot of examples from the last years where the introductions took just a few days (!!); and that is the norm rather the exeption. Denver could easily add another young male; bigger male groups seem to work even better then smallish herds of just 2-3 bulls.

Some articles on the Edge. What impressions does everyone get from this exhibit. Compared to the Denver Zoo's past exhibits and the best Amur tiger exhibits, these habitats feel underwhelming and seem smaller and less naturalistic than I anticipated. Will anyone be visiting soon?

My impression was the same. Considering how long the project took i was expecting something a bit more immersive with less chainlink. A bit disappointing considering their previous direction with carnivore exhibits, Predator Ridge in particular.

I saw a video of the habitat and it looked a lot better.
