Chester Zoo Departures

OMG, I can't belive Asoka's gone! I will miss him, although the new male from Belgium is exiting, anyone know from which Zoo/collection he's coming from? Has Asoka ever left the Zoo? I've heard some mixed reviews about Rome Zoo, some say it's quite bad! Has anyone here been to Rome Zoo? Is Asoka going to Bioparc (Rome Zoo) or another Animal collection in Rome? Sorry, a lot of questions, I'm just a little concerend, I've grown so fond of Asoka.

I'm sad to see Asoka go. He and Asha made a lovely couple, but I can see why from a studbook perspective they'd want to try different pairings. I'm gutted about Norman though :( Ever since Zoo Days I've found his hapless love life and lazy ways very endearing.

It's a shame Asoka has left the zoo, but it had been rumoured for a while. I know a certain keeper at the zoo will be devastated. I somehow doubt Asha will breed with the new male, he will take a few years to be full mature, and she may be past reproduction age then.

Bioparco is the only zoo in Rome. I've been twice (most recently in October last year) and the lion exhibit is perfectly decent (as are most of its exhibits, in fact). Asoka's father Jake was there for a while, as I recall.

And I'm not surprised at his move - his pairing with Asha was producing offspring with birth problems, after all.

I'm far more concerned about the loss of Norman - a very impressive specimen of a species Chester's not had much luck with (parthenogenesis aside).

Did the young male Asiatic Lion at Dudley also come from Plankendael - if so he could be a litter mate of Chester's new male .

Very sad about Norman - was he the second or third Komodo male that has died at Chester ? I believe there are very few mature males in the captive population .

Itar did come from Plankendael. He is a full sibling to Iblis.

I will miss Asoka but wish him all the best in Rome. Just sad we missed him by a few weeks as we are going at half term.

Does anyone know when the new male is arriving?

It's gone full circle now as Asha came from Rome Zoo in 2006.

Asoka has never left Chester until now. He was born their in October 1998.

Jake moved from Chester to Zoo Boissière in France in 2000 and died shortly after there.

The new male at Dudley is the litter sibling of Chester's forthcoming new male, I'm sure there is a sister in the litter as well.

It`s the third Male Komodo to die at Chester.

I was thinking of before he was at Chester. I know he was at London before Chester and loaned back there for a time later on - had it in my head he'd been to Rome somewhere along they way. Could be wrong, though.

The link says the lion from Belgium is coming from Planckendael.

Is this Iblis??

That answers a question i had I went today and wondered why Asha was restless, and no name card for Asoka,Also Jangolie was nowhere to be seen at the elephant enclosure inside or out.

Jangolie (well I thought it was her but you seem to confirm this for me) was inside at Midday by herslf. Also they have lots of places to put the Elephants of sight in that house!
