Odense Zoo

Odense Zoo is located 10 minutes outside the town of Odense.

Odense Zoo is splitted into different parts of the world. They have Africa, Asia and South America.

Their future plans are for the moment:

A big savannah with giraffes, zebras, Sitatungas, ostriches, crowned cranes, Nile crocodiles, pelicans and flamingos.

A big Californian Beach with sealions and sea otters called Fishbone Bay.


An Indian temple with Indian Elephants, Indian Rhinos and snow leopards


A new exhibit for their pigtail macaques

Excellent news. Might well be an European record hatching for the species!

How large is the breeding colony? How old and what age classes are there?
(perhaps our Danish posters can enlighten us)

And there is still one more egg left (although it is not certain if it is fertile or not). But what these king penguins have shown us is that this species certainly is NOT monogamous.

About the size and age classes I can't remember for sure but I will look into it for you...

It is important to note that zoo behavior and wild behavior frequently have some differences. There are several studies, involving far larger samples, that have shown that wild king's indisputably are monogamous during each breeding season, but they commonly change partners at each new breeding season. Considering the more limited partner choice in captivity, it is excellent that the zoo penguins appear able to deviated from the fairly strict wild monogamous behavior.

That was a slight change of subject. Great that king's have breed very well at Odense, one of my favorite zoos in their size category. If only they could get some emperors and repeat it with that species :p

btw, not sure how many kings they have today but in 2010 they had 13. For penguin fans another noteworthy thing at Odense is their 33 year old gentoo, reputedly the oldest known currently living penguin and it is still breeding.
