Detroit Zoo Detroit Zoo Future Ideas / Speculation Thread

The Detroit Zoo on this site has been infamous for many phaseouts over the years, and after reading the Brookfield Zoo speculation thread I felt like it would be a good idea to make a thread like this for Detroit. This thread is for talking about ideas for new animals / exhibits or how you would improve the Detroit Zoo. Just try to keep it as realistic as possible.

Detroit definitely has been improving over the last few years with the import of several new species, mostly in the way of primates. And they've also announced a brand-new children's zoo called Discovery Trails, overhauling 7 acres of the American Grasslands to exhibit stingrays, domestics and even the return of Bush Dogs. Construction has already begun, and the complex will be completed by 2026.

As for any other major projects, rumor has it that a potential Asia expansion is in the works. I'd love it if the zoo moved the Japanese Macaques down by the unused picnic site, as Detroit has too many of those that rarely get used. As for new species, I could see them expanding into the forest where the dinosaur and Lego exhibits go for the summer. While Sloth Bears will be temporarily staying from Philadelphia, I could see Detroit getting them permanently. I'd love to see Detroit get a new Asian hoofstock species like babirusas, tapirs or takin.

There were plans to turn the old Penguinarium into a Bat Conservation Center, but then covid hit and we haven't heard anything sense. I'd personally would love to see it get turned into a state-of-the-art Aquarium (which ironically, was also planned for downtown Detroit at one point), but the smaller species would need to be different to avoid competition with the Belle Isle Aquarium. Bigger species like sharks and sea turtles would definitely be a big draw and the whole thing would keep with the aquatic theme of the building.

Detroit has a lot of unused potential, and I'd love to see them capitalize on it, but I've rambled on long enough. What do you foresee in the zoo's future? What would you bring into the collection? What do you think is likely to happen?

I'd love to see some felines at Detroit. Clouded, Snow, or Amur Leopards would be a welcome addition to Asia.

North America is also very sparse. I'd like a return of prairie dogs (the exhibit is still there, just abandoned), North American porcupine (which actually might happen), maybe even moose.

As for the old penguinarium, a bat exhibit would be awesome and would really set Detroit apart. I could see it turning into a small nocturnal house if bats alone aren't enough of a draw. Detroit could also draw inspiration from Bronx and turn it into a rodent house. Lots of possibilities there but probably expensive and not a priority.

In general, I don't think Detroit is going to grow rapidly any time soon. Honestly I'd rather see Detroit slowly add to its collection and keep the trend of investing heavily into exhibit quality. Gaining only one or two major species, but make those exhibits the best of their kind.

Where was this said?

Hate to say it but there’s no way the zoo can afford that

The prairie dog habitat should stay abandoned for a while, they should receive new habitat in the new section. What did you hear about the porcupine?

I think the zoo just needs to renovate areas and build in unused land, for example the two playgrounds, dozens of picnic sites and renovate the penguinarium, Africa, Asia, and all the other exhibits in the zoo. I personally think NACC needs a renovation.

The Detroit Zoo news thread. Somebody said that Bhalu and Kayla from Philadelphia were (presumably) moving to the Detroit Zoo while their exhibit was under construction. Probably should have made that clearer.

With inflation these days, I (unfortunately) would have to agree, but the old Penguinarium probably should be their next project with how long it's been abandoned.

By the way the volunteer stated their addition, I doubt the bears are temporary. The penguinariun is best as a bat house and with the construction of the hangout I see it possible.

Honestly, if the Bat House idea happened, they need a more attractive species and more signage to get people to go through the Hangout. The few times I've been in there I'm usually the only one in besides one of my parents. Maybe Meerkats could go back in there if the bats moved?

The rock python has left and I don’t even know if that sloth exists lol, hope to see them add the meerkats back.

Is it possible that we see the tree kangaroo go into the former tree kangaroo habitat? It seems like a good size.

Coming back to this with a thought. For the old prairie dog enclosure, how well would armadillos work? They're fairly small and can burrow (some of them at least) so I feel they would be good for that space. Plus we don't have a lot of habitat South American animals.

It could be it but i am very doubtful we see something in that habitat.

Here’s and idea:
• Move Japanese macaques to Asia
• Add Hamadryas Baboons to Africa (old macaque)
• Change lion habitat into Snow Leopard
• Add lions to eland habitat (renovation) and move them to the zebras
• Move African Monkeys to new habitat
• Demolish monkey habitat for new ape enclosures or sloth bear
• Add animals to empty land

If Detroit renovates Asia next, what kind of animals will be added? I hope they expand Asia into the forest where the temporary dinosaur and Lego exhibits were, and if they did, it should be turned into a tropical Asia trail to contrast the current temperate wildlife.

Maybe a Himalayan theme? I'd like to see a generic section with gibbons, orangutans, tapirs, otters, takin, and others. These all are possibilities.

I'd love to see tapirs come to Detroit, and gibbons seem like a shoo-in with the director's love of primates. My preferred would be Siamangs. Another addition I think would be cool would be another cat species, preferably Fishing Cats or Snow Leopards.

Any cat will due for me, Amur is another option. If we word to get this expansion I am willing to bet money we see a primate, most likely orangutans but who knows, anything is possible. I like white cheeked the best, siamang are really fun too, I’ve only seen them once.
