Detroit Zoo Detroit Zoo News 2021

I really, really like Detroit, but yeah the collection has been downsized a lot - even since my visit around 2 years ago. I don't think it's always a terrible thing, especially when those areas are turned into really good exhibits (as is often the case at Detroit), but there are definitely areas that feel empty. The Camel and Wolverine/Anteater exhibits in particular feel a bit empty and a couple nice species would improve the zoo.
Are there no previous plans to fill those in? Or is that up to a new director and team?

I'm not aware of any plans one way or the other. I think it will be up to the new director and as I've said above, while I am not advocating a postage stamp-like animal collection, the current director has gone too far in winnowing species. We may as well just wait and see.

The giant anteater area also had an adjacent coati exhibit which is now no more. The macaws and curassow in the aviary are gone as well, and the lesser kudu, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, barn owls, and lion-tailed macaques are also moved out or gone. Meerkats are gone as well (replaced with a sloth and fruit bats). Bush dogs are planned to be phased out I’ve heard as well (already are? I don’t know).

And yes, cramming a truckload of animals in an area isn’t ideal, but the big species loss was way too excessive and uncalled for. Is Kagan even aware about the outcry regarding it?
Yeah, the bush dogs have been fazed out. Replaced by white storks and spoonbills. Not a fan of the change because I dislike the idea of having the same species in two different exhibits. I'm hoping it's just a temporary change so there isn't an empty exhibit.

It’s great to see Detroit Zoo continuing to breed Polar bears after a decades long commitment to breeding this species. Auckland Zoo, one of my two local zoos, imported a female Polar bear in 1984 that’d been born at Detroit Zoo in 1963. It would have been unusual to see a zoo born Polar bear in captivity in the Australasian region around this time, so I hit up the studbook expecting to see a handful of births. To my surprise, the Detroit Zoo had several cubs born to multiple mothers that year alone; and a mention one of the mothers had produced her fourth set of twins. They clearly cracked the secret of successfully breeding them early on.

Lee has been moved around: Chicago's Lincoln Park (twice), Milwaukee, Detroit, Denver and Columbus. Columbus appears to be the only zoo where he's sired a cub (1.0 Kulu, born 28 Nov 2019).

Thanks, John. Website site notes Lee arrived in "the fall of 2020". I wonder why they have to be vague when they will know the exact date he arrived?

He was moved to the zoo at the end of August 2020 and was in quarantine forever. The fall of 2020 may have been the first time he was allowed on exhibit. I haven't heard from anyone they have seen him on exhibit, but I'm sure he has at some point.

As for the outcome of any more cubs this winter, I haven't heard about Anana being back on exhibit at the Columbus Zoo. That is the only zoo I can think of that has a chance at a cub and their female isn't already back on exhibit. Lets hope some of these switch ups this winter help for this fall/winter birthing season or the next one.
