As of when I contacted the Zoo almost two weeks ago, it’s still closed until further notice. I would hope that the reopening can’t be that much further down the line, especially since it seems the penguins are back home.

As of when I contacted the Zoo almost two weeks ago, it’s still closed until further notice. I would hope that the reopening can’t be that much further down the line, especially since it seems the penguins are back home.
It appears that the arctic foxes are gone. They’re no longer listed on the website, and they weren’t mentioned in the new video when the zoo staff were discussing the Arctic Ring of Life. I think it was three sisters, who were all fairly old, so maybe they just passed and the zoo is getting new ones?
That makes me sad. I hope something come in that space. Aside from foxes I don't really know what could go in there.

The zoo added black tree monitors and rhinoceros vipers to the reptile center today.
The gorillas are no longer mixed and have been by themselves for a few years now.
Our new Detroit Zoo director is Hayley W. Murphy. She will take over from Ron Kagan on November 1. She was previously deputy director of Zoo Atlanta. I wish her luck.

Any idea what she was like with Zoo Atlanta? What she's like in general? Apparently she serves on the AZA's board of ethics, and I think the AZA butted heads with Kagan if I remember right.

A new species of nurse frog found in the Amazon has been named in honor of Marcy Sieggreen, who worked at the Detroit Zoo until her death in 2016.
Sieggreen was the curator of amphibians at the zoo and working to complete her PhD in environmental science when she died of cancer at age 43.
The new frog species is called allobates sieggreenae. It is found in the Peruvian Amazonian region where Sieggreen led the Detroit Zoological Society’s efforts and involvement in an assessment of amphibian populations, zoo officials said.

An orphaned grizzly cub from Alaska was rescued by the Detroit Zoo in addition to 2 Sea Otters! All 3 animals are now living in the Arctic Ring Of Life.

Disappointed, but not surprised.
There are blue-gray tanagers in the aviary now.
Made a visit yesterday, pronghorns are definitely gone. I found news regarding one pronghorn being sent to Topeka to join their current herd, not sure about the other animal (assuming it died?).
Novus the yak was nowhere to be seen, assuming she passed away (she was geriatric after all).

I was at the zoo on Wednesday, which means we might have actually been there at the same time!
The biggest change since my last visit I noticed was that the ring-tailed lemurs appear to have been moved back to the habitat behind the Japanese macaques (although they were not outside when I visited). I wonder what’s going to become of the habitat next to the tigers, hopefully they don’t just make it a full-time duplicate red panda enclosure.

Overall the visit was nice, but due to weather some of the animals weren’t out on-exhibit. I was surprised though that some were.
