Detroit Zoo Detroit Zoo News 2022

Do you know if the Guanacos and other species are behind the scenes or if they were transferred out?
I'm not sure about the status of any of the former species. The only one that I think might be behind the scenes is the African spurred tortoise because he's a rescue. I think the last guanaco that lived at the zoo was pretty old so he might've passed away. For the other few species, they were probably phased out knowing Detroit.

I've never seen a zoo go so far out of their way to actively make their premiere attraction worse - several times at this point.
Seriously though. The arctic foxes and seals are all gone, the almost half a dozen seals (who were an incredibly important part of the exhibit and it’s theming) were replaced by two otters, the bear viewing hasn’t been totally open in like two years, the list goes on. Is there anything good on the horizon here?

So I just recently visited the zoo a few days ago (during Bunnyville, more specifically...never doing that again) and I wanted to point out some things I noticed.

  • Didn't realize this at first, but the aviary is also closed due to the avian flu
  • The southern cassowary was the only bird on exhibit beside the penguins
  • There no longer appear to be mountain chicken frogs in the NACC. Instead, there are smoky jungle frogs.
  • A few exhibits in the NACC and HRCC are being renovated
  • The large south American yard is now home to only 3 sandhill cranes. Of course not on exhibit for obvious known reasons.
  • The entire tundra side of the Arctic Ring of Life is now closed. The last time I went back in October you were able to view part of it but were forced to turn around.

Is there any reason why they would close this part? Seems like a very odd move to close off half of the zoo’s premier attraction for seemingly no reason.
