Detroit Zoo Detroit Zoo News 2023

I went today. While I had an absolutely wonderful time as pretty much everything I wanted was active, the same can't be said for a lot of the zoo normies who were very vocally upset that all the ABC animals were either no-shows or doing things they normally do that these people don't like (lion was sleeping, red panda was high in tree) and were loudly complaining the whole time about how they paid for a zoo with "no animals". But as I said, I am not those people, I had a perfect day really.

Anyways:

* Many of the penguins are on nests. The Pygoscelis penguins that aren't on nests are courting with rocks.

* Some of the tanagers in the aviary are turquoise/blue-green hybrids.

* The green winged macaw can talk, it loudly yells "HI!" I saw a keeper give it food in a toilet paper roll as enrichment and it was almost humorous how fast it just tore right in and defeated the purpose as a foraging toy to the keeper's visible pain (less than 5 seconds).

* Maybe this has already been reported, but ring tailed lemurs are now in the old kookaburra exhibit. Wherever the red ruffed lemurs are kept, I couldn't find them.

* No signs (signage or otherwise) of The Hangout still having a sloth. Signs pointing to it now market it as the fruit bat exhibit it now is (python is still there).

* Ultra minor but there is some new signage in Devereux Tiger Forest on how to spot a Tiger King-tier facility versus a legit zoo with tigers, which is welcome.

* Tigers and pandas are surrounded by a lot of newly planted bamboo, which is still small but someday will grow to make the area a bamboo forest.

* New donkeys now live where the racehorses used to... much to a lot more anger from zoo guests than I could ever imagine, as a lot of kids were having meltdowns about how they could no longer see the horses at the zoo and even some adults sounded upset.

* Belted Galloway steer hasn't left yet, but has a trailer for transport in his pasture.

* The 3rd sea otter's name will be revealed on May 31st and the sign is prepped for the reveal.

* Chuckwalla exhibit is empty with a sign saying the habitat is getting refurbished.

A male chimpanzee was born May 26:

From socials:

We are thrilled to announce that Tanya, a 31-year-old chimpanzee who was born at the Detroit Zoo, gave birth to her first baby on Friday, May 26, 2023!

Both mother and son are doing well and enjoying some much-needed rest and bonding time.

Correct. The zoo will renovate the existing exhibit and then add in a new gorilla group in the future. It will be interesting to see what will be done with the habitat.
Is it likely to just be renovations to the indoor area, or do you think they'll maybe expand the ape yard the gorillas usually use? Are there other renovations anyone can think of to accommodate a large, presumably for a breeding troop of gorillas?

The three silverback gorillas left for the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden in early July.

Turns out Detroit will not be gorilla-less for any time after all. They received a new troop of 4:0 gorillas back in mid-to late-May. Three are from Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, Mshindi, Bandia and Tulivu, and one, Nayembi, is from Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo.

That would be 1.3 gorillas, Mshindi is the only male. This will be a breeding troop which is very exciting considering Detroit has had a bachelor troop for quite a long time.

I apologize for the confusion, I should have checked more clearly. I just thought that they would be staying with a bachelor troop, so that is why I assumed they were all male.
