Even if it does end up just being for Tubby, it’s still cool to see them construct* a new outdoor habitat for a large(ish) animal, I believe this and the new cassowary exhibit in the Australian Walkabout are the first new ones since the wolf exhibit. Even cooler that it’s being built on what was previously not being used as exhibit space.

*not counting expansions of existing outdoor habitats like for the giraffes, red pandas, and tigers.
I doubt it is just for tubby, I believe there are 2-5 habitats.

Do you guys have a plan for the newly renovated area. I have a soft spot for any zoo that dedicates outdoor habitats for herps and giant tortoises (Stigmochelys sulcata are the 3rd largest tortoise globally).

Currently there are no public plans for any future habitats or renovations besides an outdoor ape renovation.

A little trip report!

I went on a hot afternoon so some animals were no shows (sea otter, grizzly bear)

The San Esteban Island Chuckwalla exhibit was covered up with a sign saying the exhibit is not viewable. Anyone know what's up with that?

I couldn't find the sulcata tortoise in its exhibit next to the pelicans. Anyone know if it's still on display or not? I assumed it wasn't hiding because if it's an adult tortoise I feel like it'd be hard to spot.

A zookeeper indicated that although they're hopeful about their gorilla troop breeding, it didn't seem like there were any specific signs of that happening at the moment.

The same zookeeper sadly wasn't able to say which species will be included in the large construction being done right now.

An earlier post stated "The wetland tank in Amphibiville has been split: 3/4s belong to pumpkinseed sunfish while 1/4 belongs to an African clawed frog". On my visit I did not see any clawed frogs and it was just sunfish.

I didn't visit Australian outback or the American section with wolves, eagles, bison, and wolverines so no notes there.

The wildlife interpretive gallery was closed for a private event by the time I arrived which was really quite sad.

The tortoise is probably getting a new habitat but it would be if not behind the scenes in the aardvark, zebra or eland habitats. The new area is at least planned to include bush dogs, prairie dogs, giant anteaters, reimagined barnyard and stingrays.

I didn’t see it with the zebra or eland. I was unable to visit the aardvark so maybe it was there if it wasn’t behind the scenes. Thanks for giving me some info on the construction. It sounds like it’ll be pretty cool!

I believe it can be seen by the flamingos.

I made a quick visit yesterday day and there were many changes.
• Two red panda cubs were born on the 17th
• South American Horned frogs and axolotls are in the kids cave
• The new habitat being built by the picnic of polar bears is now for miniature donkeys
• Chinese crocodiles are in the former water monitor habitat, dwarf caimans are in the former Chinese alligator and the arrau turtles are in the caiman habitat
• Tubby (spurred tortoise) and the pelicans are in the old hippo pool taking up 3/4 of the aardvark habitat with the aardvarks rotating with the giant anteaters.
• Cassowary habitat is 2 yards with plans to include a male.
• Kid zone to include from updated list from today, prairie dogs, bush dogs, giant anteaters, old barn animals. Possibly to include tree kangaroo, camels, rhea, sandhill crane, SA monkey (probably squirrel), and aardvarks. Many other species that the volunteer forgot was included or may be, she said the plans keep changing.

There is already a male cassowary. He is still immature, I don't recall his name. If the volunteer didn't me tion stingrays are we still sure they'll be included? Seemed like they would be.

I didn’t know they had a male already, she did mention stingrays, I just forgot to type stingrays. Is the male on exhibit? Both habitats were opened for the female.
