Zoo Map - 1995 - ZooChat

This snowleopard gallery upload of a map from 1995 is the closest thing I can find for a species list that is over 20 years old.

I can picture, of what's listed on this map, the following possible animals in that exhibit: Hystrix porcupine, American alligator, giant tortoise, coati, or whichever "waterfowl" they had (highly unlikely as they are, the one group directly mentioned, steamer ducks, would be great).

Regardless of what happens, very excited that there will be animals in that space again!

No matter what, everyone in the comments guessing "elephants!" is wrong lol

Coati was at the zoo in 2013 I believe.

They have/had porcupines as of recently. Takins were in Detroit a little over a decade ago, so my most likely guess is going to be the sloth bear. Either that, or hyenas... (I really hope)
When were porcupines? Takins left in 2008 I think, I’m hoping for a bear or hyenas sound amazing. Is it possible for sun bears?

I found a map from 2003 (guide book to 75 years) and animals that I find to be possibilities are: Maned Wolf, Gibbon, Langur, Capybara, Coati(still possible), waterfowl, Mandrill, and maybe just maybe Pygmy hippo. (Big no for hippo).

Why do people *want* to put a species like sloth bears or hyenas in that space? Looking at the size alone, it'd be a pretty terrible exhibit for that large of a mammal- and would stick out like a sore thumb compared to the many huge, excellent exhibits elsewhere at Detroit Zoo. Something like the coatis or porcupines mentioned would be MUCH more space-appropriate choices.

It looks larger than the grottos at Brookfield Zoo Chicago, which I guess isn't really saying much but it wouldn't be the worst for either species. I don't remember where this is in the zoo from my single visit though, so I don't know if the picture is misleading.

I think it looks a bit big for something like a coati or a porcupine but definitely wouldn't fit with Detroit's standards for other megafauna.... grotto-style exhibits are out for cats and bears but tend to be a poor fit for smaller species in my experience. Look forward to finding out what goes there.

It’s not that small of an habitat, in recent years it held, black bears, red pandas and most recently a grizzly bear. I’m not sure what we may get but I still think the sloth bear is a possibility.

It’s located behind the grizzly habitat, near the indoor giraffe holding and entrance to the austrailian walkthrough exhibit.

The article has the words “spruce up THEIR new home”. That probably means we are getting at least 2 animals and spruce may be hinting at the NA porcupine.
