Detroit Zoo Detroit Zoo News 2025

Third discovery trails construction update, mosaic wall, a farmers market in the old barn (with indoor areas for domestics), and bush dogs! Seems their exhibit will have a pool and seems to have the “no barrier look”. This is a picture I took of the habitat:
Look like to be nice size bush dog exhibit for 3 of them. Were the dog imported or from US Zoo?

Two sets of news for today:
• A new Michigan law is to remove the blocks on large carnivore breeding, allowing bears, and “larger” cats to breed (bigs cats plus cougar and cheetah). This law was only in place at AZA facilities with USDA incident reports, allowing both John Ball Zoo and the Detroit Zoo to breed large carnivores again.

• The historic Belle Isle Zoo (Owned by Detroit Zoological Society) is being demolished after being closed for nearly 25 years. In the future it will become nature trails and parking space.

I visited today, but went with family so not pictures or major details. I did see that the keepers who work with the pelicans seem to be trying to create train them. Could be nothing, but hopefully they're not moving them to another zoo.
Did you happen to see the camels or white lipped deer?

I wouldn't put much faith in the app, I recall the concern about the camels coming from their absences in the app. The red-tailed monkeys were already removed from the website, so I would think if the camels were leaving, they might have been gone already. Perhaps not, only time will tell.

Could someone post the pdf with the plans for the giraffe area? I cannot find it. Thank you
AMHigley_Zoo_9.9.24-2 few pages in.
The white-lipped x Bactrian deer hybrid would surely be in her mid-20s by now, which is ancient for a deer... If she is somehow still alive, it would not surprise me if does not want to show herself very often — especially as the weather cools.
Once in a blue moon I will see her, usually in the back shelter; behind a gate. I saw her a month ago.

Such a shame. Jeez, the entire population is down to two in under 5 years! I remember when there used to be calves, seems those days are long gone. Just Suren and Rusi now, plus the white-lipped deer.

The new giraffe calf will go on exhibit some time in the next few weeks, supposedly around Christmas. The lion cubs will go on exhibit in the Spring, from what I've heard they are aiming to be on exhibit by Spring Break to help build crowds.
