Once again the Detroit Zoo is the site of the United States debut of the amazing Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, produced and first displayed by the Natural History Museum London.

Zawadi, the female giraffe that was born at the zoo 2 years ago is no longer there. A docent said she went to another zoo. I'm not sure where she went, but it must have been pretty recent. She's no longer listed on the website: Giraffe - Detroit Zoo
I got a good look at the new Red Panda exhibit. It looks really nice. It doesn't look like it'll open in 2018 like they previously said, but I don't doubt that it'll be done by the spring. The tiger exhibit still has a ways to go, looked like just some holes in the ground still.

Found out from another zoo employee that Zawadi went to the San Diego zoo.

I've gotta say, this has been an absolutely terrible few days for zoos lately: the snow leopard escape at Dudley, the painted dog death at Topeka, Lily the elephant's death at the Oregon Zoo, now this.
Well at least there was some luck this year for polar bears.

Last I saw, the Master Plan included moving around species already at the zoo, as well as bringing in new ones, and some new construction like the boardwalk over the lake in the Conservation Campus portion of the zoo. The new species added that were on the Master Plan include North American beavers (Linden & Eve) and the gray wolves (Kaskapatew and Waziyata). I know the zoo plans on renovating the old Penguinarium into a new bat house, but the bat species to be displayed are/is yet unknown. Other animals listed to be added at a later time were snow leopards, bongos, black and white colobus monkeys, pygmy hippos, and jaguars. A turtle conservation building was also planned (sadly, it's supposed to go where the camels are now, and the camels were not anywhere in the Master Plan. They also plan to get rid of the large South American exhibit where the guanacos, screamer birds, and peccaries live to construct a massive playground). Though don't quote me, the master plan could change, although every project they've done so far was on the Master Plan I saw, so that's a really good sign.
Where can the zoo’s master plan be found? And Is there a way to see it (this is the first time I’ve heard of it so I’m curious what it entails)?
There used to be a PDF of it online but it's no longer there. I volunteered there regularly for a few years so that's how I knew about the different parts of the Master Plan.
I am curious though. Does anyone know any of the names of the red kangaroos, guanacos, or African birds at the zoo. Or is there anyone on here who would. I know most of the animals' names, but none of the volunteers knew the names for individuals of these species.
Or perhaps they will go the San Francisco route and design an exhibit about bats with no actual bats...
They do a lot of conservation activities and dedicate a lot of effort towards buildings and certain areas towards teaching about welfare and conservation. I wouldn't be surprised. Although they rescued a large amount of bats; something like 53 or 54 individual fruit bats. So hopefully those bats are going on exhibit. They did keep the sloth that was rescued with them. I'd be happy either way, although live bats would be amazing. When I talked to someone who's high up at the zoo, I asked what species would be going on exhibit, and he said he didn't know, like live bats were planned. So, I'm assuming at least some live bats will be in the building.
