Estimado David, this a good article on a very recent event. I have worked often in Chiapas and visit almost every year. Interethnic rivalry over natural preserved areas can be very difficult to understand. The lacandon indians do a good job of preserving the forest but the other groups ( Chol and Tzotzil are basically displaced farmers. This is exactly where us anthropologists come in, to establish communication between the different groups and the government. At least in chiapas there are not any outside
commercial interests which make matters worse. I think Carabias was somewhat careless in her approach and may have offended some of the local groups. She was in a high political office once. This is why anthropologists and field biologists should cooperate in these difficult projects.
