Edinburgh Zoo Developments at Edinburgh Zoo

I'm very dissapointed with the fact HWP are moving out their wolves. Regardless of all these big new animals, they have been drawcards for so many years now, and their enclosure is world class.

To be honest though, I think Mercedes will be a bigger draw card:
"Come and see the UK's only Polar bear" sounds a lot more interesting (to most of the public) than "come and see a pack of wolves in a great exhibit".

Still, when I spoke to the keeper in August he said the plans were to keep polar bears in a section of the reserve viewable from opposite the tiger enclosure. Surely Mercedes and wolves would both be able to stay at the park?

By the looks of it Mercedes will be going into the huge wolf enclosure, around which the fencing is only light chain link, so it must be electric fences all the way round, a pool will also have to be installed.
wolves, wildcats and European otters for the zoo, along with the beavers, i suppose this is the EAZA year for European carnivores, so maybe temporary?

I think the swap is only temporary... the keeper did say that mercedes was "she is going on her holidays" and then in the same sentence mention wolves are coming here... i assume that its the HWP wolves but it might be others :)

With the Japanese serow moving to the HWP that will free up their current enclosure, the former wolf wood.
I think Mercedes is now getting too old to be moved back and forth and if she is heading north i think it will be permanent.
The wolves are one of the major attractions at HWP, but now with the tigers, macaques, red pandas and the promise of the polar bear and the leopards, there will be plenty to bring in the visitors.

Aren't the wolves at HWP all males? Could they be importing females to join them?
If I remember the geography of the park correctly, 'opposite the tiger enclosure' could mean the corner of the reserve where the elk use the pools. This would mean constructing a large new enclosure which would need to be designed so that it could be occupied by further polar bears (or perhaps bears of another species) after Mercedes has passed on.

I was planning on going to the HWP today, but the weather has stopped that so hopefully i will make it tomorrow or saturday, so i will ask when i am up there if there is anyone around :)

Here is a link to the pictures i took yesterday at the zoo...

I especially like the purple faced languars baby... took me ages to get that one shot..lol..hope you enjoy

Great pictures

does anyone know if the Kulan are there yet and if they are still on track for the Gaur

Having seen the item I would agree with you Kiang, although in the earlier years of the zoo they did have the Caird Aquarium in what is now the Zoo entrance building, but that closed some years ago and they haven't had cichlids and rays there as the item showed. Obviously somone using some library footage to fill up a gap in the sequence.

Surely it would be far more interesting in keeping with Edinburgh's recent record of bringing in obscure species if they brought in something like red wolves or maybe something along that line. Now that would make it far more interesting to a zoo enthusiast!!!.

figures for HWP look promising!!

zoo figures just below 2006 figs (655k)

awaiting annual report/statutory accounts in April/May to see if turnover for HWP improved

last year retail & catering turnover was significently increased (they do the best baked potatoes & carrot cake!!!!!) so here is hoping the Tigers have helped this further
