Edinburgh Zoo Developments at Edinburgh Zoo

palns were submitted but they were turned down for lottery money so the project has been put on the backburner, but according to rzss chief executive david windmill discussions will be ongoing

Who owned the old glasgow site/ made money from the land sale? Is this a totally new project?

I think Glasgow Zoo was owned by the Council. Situated well outside the city in a rather run-down suburban area, it was in my opinion the WORST Zoo I've ever seen in the UK. I went once and conditions were terrible. Dilapitated cages, rusting and broken fences, paddocks of mud or packed earth, a bird house where every cage was full of old droppings... and that was as late as mid 1990's.

From memory, there was a single White rhino, Asiatic bears, Lions, and in the past they had bred Cheetahs. There was a notice saying they had applied to keep Asiatic Lions but had been turned down,(no doubt because of the substandard housing). The Zoo Director, who is now dead, was actually a very earnest and cultured man with a great wealth of Zoological knowledge. But somehow he wasn't able to obtain adequate funding from the Council to keep the zoo running properly.

Presumably after years of allowing it to moulder, the City Council would have benefited from the closure. Perhaps its been sold for housing?

have just seen a picture on flickr of what looks like a female purple faced langur with a baby i thought the female had died can anyone clear up this mystery

The purple face langurs are in 6 months quarantine and there appears to be 2 groups, so they are new arrivals at the zoo.

bongo, where did they come from and are they in the monkey house. what other new species have arrive or are arriving. p.s thanks for the info.

Did Adelaide zoo send them a pair a year or two ago?

Perth used to house a pair of Trachypithecus vetulus nestor, the subspecies from the western provinces of Sri Lanka (2004). Both Belfast and Twycross have maintained - for quite a while now - the monticola subspecies from the Sri Lanka hill tracts.

The purple face langurs are housed in the monkey house. The Zoo recently received a male Amur Leopard which is in quarantine before being moved to the HWP.
The Zoo also has a new Female Jaguar.

Hot off the press!

Edinburgh Zoo
1.3 Pallas' cat kittens born doing well. And 5, yes ... you read correctly purple-faced langurs were imported from Singapore Zoo. A male at Edinburgh has been sent in exchange to pair with the only female of her subspecies. The original male is the same subspecies. So, another problem solved!

Highland Wildlife Park
A 4th bison calf born recently. The Bactrian wapitis, a highly endangered red deer cervid from Central Asia, whose breeding group was housed at Edinburgh Zoo is today and tomorrow being moved out the the HWP.

will all the purple faced langurs be staying at edinburgh or will 1 or more maybe got to belfast?

I've recently seen two stories concerning Edinburgh Zoo.

Firstly the sealion enclosure is to be re-developed for a group of Patagonian Sealions.

Secondly, Edinburgh council have refused planning permission on land which the Society were considering selling to finance their 20 year plan.

Heard about the sealoins a few months ago only trouble is i cannot think of any spare in the U.K don`t know about Europe. The council refusing planning is not good would think that will give them a bit of a funding headache.

I don't know where the Patagonians are coming from, but the two remaining Californians are going to Emmen.

The Council has today passed a decision on building atop Costorphine Hill. The plan that was to be the start up finance for Edinburgh's mayor overhaul has now fallen through as the planning commission has rejected building housing on green land. :(

It will put the plans back a few years, the sale of the land with planning permission would have raised a lot of money.

There's a bloody phone mast on top of the hill at the moment - which they must have granted planning permission for!
