I wouldn't want to live on the top of Costorphine Hill. Its usually shrouded in fog and drizzle whenever I've been there. Still, it would be handy for the zoo...
 
Masterplan in trouble?

This planning decision could really put the brakes on the zoo's masterplan. It now sounds like they suddenly have a £20 million shortfall in funding (incidentally, since when did the cost of the masterplan leap from £58 million to the now-reported £72 million???)

I suppose the other side of the coin is that Edinburgh must already have over £50 million of funding in place which is pretty impressive and should mean that many of the proposed new developments still happen (providing that the funding isn't conditional).

have found more info on the planned land to be sold off at edinburgh zoo, it is looking likely that the decision not to rezone the land will go to appeal and go through this time as one of the councillors for the sale of the land was on holiday at the time of the vote

I ruled out the kudu Jonathon because they are lighter in colour, but what baffles me is the photographer, taking a pic of a rabbit, when there are all these magnificent antelope and zebra on the plains exhibit?
 
Well when we where at Chester zoo, some people were watching the ducks, while the baby buffalo was skipping around on the paddock!
 
The Edinburgh zoo website has confirmed they have two nyala calves on the African plains exhibit, first time they have bred nyala.
 
Hang on..........if edinburgh is looking to go into patagonian sealions and the remaining 2 californians were going to emmen, then why did blackpool send their 3 year old sealion (californian) 'Arnie' to edinburgh a few weeks ago? Can anyone clear this up?
 
edinburgh zoo has californian sealions again was there today love the new chimp hous and rainbow landings as well altho the birds have access to uncovered wires that i think is a bit unsafe
 
The exhibit 'Living Links' has been opened to the public. The offical opening is on 20th of May with Jane Goodall opening it (I have been invited to the opening). Living Links houses 2 mixed groups of Squirrel Monkeys and Capuchin Monkeys.
 
I got a good look around the Living Links exhibit a fortnight ago. It is a superb set up. The monkeys are not mixed yet. There are also agoutis with one of the groups of squirrel monkeys.
 
I really must get up to Edinburgh soon, it's probably the only major UK zoo im yet to visit and with all these interesting enclosures just adds to it.
 
Some titbits from the latest annual report:

1. Living Links cost £1.8million

2. RZSS are developing a proposal for an animal attraction in Glasgow

3. RZSS are reviewing the Edinburgh Zoo masterplan following the council ruling that housing surplus zoo land could not be used for housing.

4. RZSS are going to contest the decision in the public enquiry but the outcome may not be known until the end of 2009.

5. There is a £3.4million fund for development of the Masterplan

6. Visitor numbers -7% at Edinburgh and -2% at HWP. They blame the wet summer
 
According to ISIS the following changes have taken place to the stock.

0.1 aye aye, has the male died or been moved?
1.2 white lipped deer a new female has been acquired
0.0.1 purple faced langur shown as a recent birth.

but then again with ISIS, pinch of sat anyone?
 
wow, its ashame giraffe cant go on to the african planes, it looks so natural, it would be nice to see rhinos in the exhibit aswell
 
Hey bongo, have the drill and the aye aye moved to the former gorilla house yet?
The monkey house is going to be quite empty now with the drill and aye aye moving out just leaving the guenons and langurs and the yellow fronted capuchin.
