Edinburgh Zoo Developments at Edinburgh Zoo

Well this summer me and my family are going on holiday to the north of England and we're planning on taking a train journey up there.

I last went in 2004 so I'm really looking foward toseeing how its developed! Especially their new chimpanzee exhibit!:D

Just a minor point but surely if you are going to Edinburgh you are visiting Scotland and not England,to some people in SCOTLAND they would be very upset by the fact that you think its part of England.

To be fair I think Goretex meant he was holidaying in the North of England (as in Northumberland) and was thinking of getting a train from there to Edinburgh (Newcastle to Edinburgh is about an hour and a half by train).

People in the North East would be just as offended to be referred to as Scottish!!

Thats precisely what I meant.;) And just what we did last time. I'm sorry I had absouloutely no intention to be offensive.

I live in Scotland and totally understood what you meant and was not offended, can't see why anyone would be?

EAZA have announced that their 2013 annual conference will be held in Edinburgh, as part of the zoos 100th anniversary.
The meetings for the following years have also been announced.
2010 - Verona
2011 - Montpellier
2012 - Alpenzoo Innsbruck (as part of their 50th anniversary)

heres a good idea for any future developments at edinburgh would be good if they redone the duck ponds netted over the ones that are not covered and brinbg some interesting bird species as the area where the duck ponds are just now are in the oceans and wetlands are...... just an idea i had : -)

yes I agree with Mr Gelada!

under the existing(old) masterplan the last area for redevelopment was the Oceans & Wetlands so I imagine the existing duck ponds will be there for several years

Netting this over and increasing the species held there will make an interesting exhibit meantime

Here is a video of the Guinea baboon in their new enclosure, i see it is only one half of the outside enclosures that have been developed, are there plans for the other side to be done too?

isis is showing that 1 male and 1 female drill are no longer at edinbrough! anyone no where they when or what happened?

I have seen - probably on the Zoo Blog a while ago - a report that a male and female of the original three Drills have been sent to another collection , sorry I cannot remember which . This leaves the second original male and the 2 females that came from the US .

Any sign of the sun bears?

Towards the end of June and certainly before the school holidays start in Scotland.

As for the drills, yes, it's the original big male and the American females that remain. I can't remember where the other two moved on to though.

Its possible the two sister females from the US didn't get along with the original(unrelated) one, whom I also heard was regarded as a 'non-breeder' anyway?

It would be interesting to know where this pair have gone but it seems they are likely to stay as an 'exhibit only' somewhere (unless more females are added).

Chimp update

Can anyone provide an update on the Chimpanzees- specifically, have any of the 'old' and 'new' group members been mixed together yet, or how is it working out generally?

They have mixed some members of each by creating a third group, I think so far Louis, Ricky, Emma and Cindy are in the group with a couple of females from the new group and maybe a male (not sure), seems to be going well so far....

And any update on the former European wolf enclosure, anyone know what is going in there?
