I was saddened to read of the death of Dr Devra Kleiman, emeritus Senior Scientist at the NZP Washington. She was a pioneer of zoo biology and her work with golden lion tamarins played a crucial role in the conservation of the species.
There is an interesting obituary is at washingtonpost.com.

R.I.P. She indeed was a champion/role model for wildllife conservation and in particular golden lion tamarins. If it had not been for her, we would not have had callichtrid species recovery programmes ... :D

I was in touch with Dr Kleiman just a few weeks ago, interviewing her for a book I am writing on giant pandas. I didn't know her well, but it's pretty clear to me she was an amazing woman. I have a personal reflection about her on my blog.
