A Jungle nymph - a stick-insect species - hatched. Not very special but in this case it was. The egg from which the little female hatched was laid 3 ( ! ) years ago ! Normaly eggs of this species hatch 'already' afther one and a half year but because this egg stayed good, it was left in the incubater and now it has hatched.
Went today to de Oliemeulen to have a look at the newly hatched African dwarf crocodiles. They are housed in a relative small tank in a seperate room which is normaly used for small exhibitions and this summer it was also the Butterfly-free-flight.
Althrough the tank is quite small it has a lot of hidding-places and I could only discover 2 of the 6 babies. Have up-loaded already some pictures of the parents, the nursery and the babies themself in the Dierenpark de Oliemeulen - Gallery.
Noted a few changes today during a short visit :
- the few smaller aquariums near the entrance have been replaced by 1 larger one ( see Aquarium | ZooChat )
- Dumeril's boa not longer on display, in the tank now a Reticulated python is kept
- Also the Western diamond rattlesnake was not on display anymore. Its tank and that of the Egyptian cobra are now made 1 larger tank and the Egyptian cobra has a larger enclosure.
Visited De Oliemeulen today and again some small changes :
- the old ocelot died for a few months and now a new female has been obtained and they are searching for a new male.
- the enclosure where first the Dumeril's boas and then a reticulated python was kept, is now home to a pair of Fiji iguanas.
- new species : Black tree monitor ( Varanus beccari ) - not completly new because the species has been kept in the past ( see Varanus beccari | ZooChat ).
- emu ( see Emu | ZooChat )
- millipede ( unknown species ( see Millipede species | ZooChat )
- Pasco dartfrog ( see Pasco dartfrogs - Ranitomeya lamasi panguana | ZooChat )
- and ( as far as I can remember ) a lifer for me ( ) Anolis gingivinus ( see Anolis gingivinus | ZooChat )
Some observations from todays visit :
- Red-punckted burrowing frog ( Leptodactylus laticeps ) not any longer on display, their enclosure is now home to a small group of Painted dart frogs.
- Womas also not anymore on display, replaced by some Ball pythons.
- Former enclosure Fiji iguanas complete empty at the beginning of my visit ( see Former Fiji iguana enclosure | ZooChat ), 2 hours later it was full decorated but without animals and without sign ( see New decorated enclosure | ZooChat ).
- Births / hatchlings :
- Green water dragon ( see Baby Green water dragon | ZooChat )
- Freckled monitor ( see Young Freckled monitor | ZooChat )
- White-throated ( White-shouldered ) capuchin
Some notes of my short visit today :

- In the old Fiji iguana enclosure a new species can be seen, the Water monitor - Varanus salvator :
- Emerald tree monitor - Varanus prasinus has again replaced the 2 Black tree monitors :
- Harris's hawk was sitting on the nest - don't know however if they have ( already ) eggs.
