Dierenpark Zie-ZOO Dierenpark Zie-ZOO news 2025

The group of Humboldt penguins at ZiE-ZOO zoo will move to AquaZoo Leeuwarden next week. The zoo has come to the conclusion that the current enclosure can no longer offer optimal animal welfare. Penguins normally live in larger groups and need more water and land area than the enclosure can provide.

The penguin and Inca tern enclosure will be included in the future redesign of the old part of the zoo. For now, the Inca terns will remain on display in the aviary.

Zie-Zoo is working on planning the first phase of a major overhaul of the oldest parts of the zoo, which is planned to be start later this year and be finished next year and will include new exhibits and new species. The first area to be redeveloped includes the penguin/Inca tern aviary, the area with the porcupines, meerkats, former red river hog exhibit and mongoose and meerkat exhibits, Demoiselle crane and Kirk's dik-dik exhibit, squirrel and pheasant aviary, raccoon exhibit and Sarus crane aviary. Some species have already moved from or will soon move out of this area. More details will be communicated later.

Zie-Zoo's last cusimanse was euthanized due to old age-related health issues.

The cusimanse exhibit will be modified to house Zie-Zoo's group of dwarf mongooses, who currently live in the oldest part of the zoo that is planned to be overhauled.

It has not yet been mentioned here it seems;

the side-striped jackals (they were never officially part of the collection, but on display in an enclosure near the zoo's parking lot), have left for a zoo/sanctuary in Hungary, the RepZOOtic Animal Center

I am glad I was able to enjoy these rare animals a few times, as I am very unlikely to ever visit that Hungarian place.

Is this recent? I went in October 2023 and aparently they were already gone then.

If so that narrows the gap for them to have left quite a lot, as I saw them present and correct at Zie-Zoo on 7th September 2023.

I actually saw them on April 14th, 2024, but from what I understand they left not too long after that. I found a post in a Facebook group mentioning them gone by May 13th, 2024.

Zie-Zoo albino raccoon died on Wednesday. She was found dead in the exhibit by keepers in the morning. Her cause of death will be investigated by the veterinary faculty of Utrecht University. At 15 she was old for a raccoon.

This morning Zie-Zoo's male yellow-throated marten moved to Zoo Dresden for breeding purposes. He was the last of his species at Zie-Zoo after the female's death, the former marten exhibit will be used to give the Pallas's cats more space.

I happen to have visited Zie-Zoo just today, and I have a few additional updates.
  • The construction of the scavenger aviary seems to be going well and it looks like it will become a pretty impressive exhibit.
  • The eyed dabb lizard terrarium in the Zie-Zoo college log cabin was empty. The eyed dabb lizards were in the terrarium next to the round-eared elephant shrews in the animal attic above the restaurant. The greek tortoises are now in the former gila monster terrarium.
  • The striped skunks currently live in the modified former otter exhibit. The former skunk exhibit housed two Flemish giant rabbits.
  • The spider monkeys have been temporarily moved to an off-show exhibit because the female has an injured hand, and they did not want to separate them. I actually noticed they are being kept in the octagonal house near the bush dogs, because one previously appeared in front of a partially uncovered widow. This house was at some point actually intended for the spider monkeys, although they never actually moved go to this house (until recently), and the two ugly floating islands in the South American exhibit lake are still unused for unclear reasons. The exhibit normally housing the spider monkeys currently temporarily houses a tayra.
  • The European aviary is undergoing some renovations.
  • The striped hyena seemed to have some kind of skin problem or infection on one side of her body.

I saw the maned wolves and plains viscachas this time, but sadly was again not lucky with the Chacoan maras and Siberian weasels.

The only striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena dubbah) in the Netherlands has died at Dierenpark ZiE-ZOO. Because a new striped hyena will soon be arriving at the park, the 19-year-old female already present underwent a health check under anaesthesia. This examination revealed that she had several tumours in her body. Because the prognosis was not promising, the decision was made to euthanise her. The subsequent autopsy revealed that many of her organs had been affected by the tumours.

Sad to read about the loss of the old lady striped hyena that I saw and took photos of earlier this year, but glad to read they are continuing with this species.

A male striped hyena recently arrived at Dierenpark ZiE-ZOO. He was born on the 10th of July 2024 at Parc Zoologique de la Barben in France. With a bit of luck, he will now also be visible in the outdoor enclosure. The zoo hopes to acquire a female in the future.

In the future, the striped hyenas will be housed where the spotted hyenas are now. The spotted hyenas will soon be moving to DierenPark Amersfoort.

For the first time in Zie-Zoo 1 Ring-tailed Vontsira is born.

Maybe the reason the "attic" was closed this week? I really wanted to see the kowari, but unfortunately the section was closed. I did see viscachas (among others) for the first time in 15 years, so it was a succesfull visit anyway.
